Google Pixel 7 and Air 2s: Live Feed from Camera is not showing, only still image of when it first turns on

Martin Cortes

I was running the Beta test app on my Google pixel 3a running Android 12 to fix the take off issue. I got a new phone the pixel 7 running android 13, and it seemed I can still take off with the beta, but I could not edit a flight plan on my phone ( it would say there was no internet) and it had the still image instead of the camera feed. Though when I checked the results of the flight, it did take the top photos straight down like I wanted. I got out of the beta version of the app, and installed the public version, and it looks like I can take off, and edit the flight plans, but the camera still does not show a live stream of what it is doing.

I think there was a similar issue with the Galaxy S21. Anything I can do on my end? Or does this need to be fixed on your end?

If indicating no internet internet then that’s a device issue. Either no Wi-Fi or cell service which is needed for editing. Maybe no service at that time. If no camera feed or internet not working it may be you did not grant all permissions which is required. There are 11 of them and all need to be granted to including a coupe for internet. I’d either check your permission settings or delete app and reinstall and make sure you go through each one slowly and grant permission. Good luck.

    Hi Mike,

Thank you for your response. The no internet notification when trying to edit is actually no this issue at the moment. That was just background info, showing that on my new phone, I was starting with the Beta app because that was what I had on my older phone. I had the beta app on my Google Pixel 3a because it allowed my drone to take off. With my new phone, taking off is no longer an issue.

The current issue is issues with the live feed on the camera. It works fine within the DJI Fly app, but not in Dronelink. It was an issue in both he Beta app, and the public app I have now.

Do you have any insights on this?

I don’t use Android but there are some issues with some devices which just won’t work. If deleting the app, re-installing it making sure all permissions are granted doesn’t work then I don’t know. Unless someone else is using that specific device without issues it’s anyone’s guess. That Google Pixel 7 indicates it was just recently released so maybe it’s something in the devices settings. I’d check and see if you can find anything which has to do with camera access. Sorry I can’t help more Martin. Maybe DL staff can assist if your not able to get the camera feed working.

Hello, I have the exactly same problem with my Pixel 7 Pro. Here is my topic : https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/11196339970323-Camera-black-on-Pixel-7-Pro

As you can see in the last answer, they know about the problem, but it will maybe be fixed someday (or never...)

What's the ETA on this bug fix? Has it been patched in the Beta application?

    Same answer as this thread

DJI confirmed that this is a bug and they will correct it in the 4.16.5 release of the MSDK (no timeline given).

Dare I point out that Litchi fixed the same camera feed issues on the Pixel 6 and Samsung S22 last year.

Is a similar fix not possible, rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for DJI to release an update?

Ask them to share how they did it and we will be happy to add in the fix.

DJI confirmed that the only solutions are:

    1. Implement a custom video decoder (don't use the stock DJI video decoder)
    2. Wait until Jun 20 when they release 4.17 with the updated DJI video decoder

We will be doing option 2.

    Use a different device.

As in another phone running IOS? That seems quite strange to me. I pay almost €60 for an android version, not even the beta version, and the app is unusable. And if I had a phone with IOS, would I have to purchase the app again?? I believe that a brand like Dronelink should not sell products that do not work.

In this case I meant another Android device.

if I had a phone with IOS, would I have to purchase the app again?

No, unlike some of our competitors that charge twice for the mobile app on different platforms, Dronelink allows you to pay once for your account and use it wherever you want.

I believe that a brand like Dronelink should not sell products that do not work.

There is no possible way that we can guarantee that Dronelink works on every single device known to man. This is why we recommend that all users test their device for free first to make sure, and also why we have a lenient refund policy for those users that choose to not do that.

I just happened to purchase this app on June 18th and I understand there is an update coming on June 20th to the DJI MSDK (I.E today)?   I have a Google Pixel 7 and though I can connect to my Mavic Mini with the Dronelink app and control my drone, I cannot see the video feed other than when it displays a picture for a brief moment.

When can I expect this to be corrected for the Google Pixel 7?

This is what DJI said, as of now there is still no update posted:

    https://developer.dji.com/

When can I expect this to be corrected for the Google Pixel 7?

If / when DJI posts the fix, we will integrate it into the current beta (4.7.0) which usually takes weeks to be released. You can join the beta if you want to help test.

I have the same issue with my pixel 7a and dji mini 2. I can run mission without problem, but live video feed is unusable, so I need also the dji app to control the drone manually.

I understand that this is a per device issue? With another android device I could get a correct video feed?

Stefano Follador, yes there are many other Android devices that work well with Dronelink & mini2, I've used the following devices with no problem:

    LG V50

Galaxy Tab 7 FE (my default flying choice)

    Galaxy Fold Z2

Galaxy Fold Z4 (not actually flown using this as can't fit it on the controller, due to the case I have on it, but have had it connected, and no problems)

Check out this Google Sheet for other devices

Unfortunately I'm finding myself in the same situation as others. Pixel 7 with an Air 2S. I see this and the other thread on the topic last mentioned July possibly being a fix. It seems DJI keep pushing it back, are they now saying September or unknown?

I even tried checking the release notes and it looks like 4.7.1 BETA column makes no mention of a fix. Is there a beta with a fix?

edit: I have a older Samsung Tab A 8" I dusted off that "works" but ya, doesn't give smooth playback. I'm looking into other options, possibly trading up to a Tab S7 maybe? I hear that seems well recommended.

edit2: The Tab A 8" I had was able to run the Dronelink app but didn't seem responsive enough to fly the mission. The experience was choppy & Dronelink app kept stopping the mission every like 20secs with the "Device not powerful enough" warning(Disappointing, but understandable).
Instead, I just tried flying the mission with my Pixel 7 as is. It wasn't a large area and pretty open so I kept eyes on it fairly easily.

While I didn't have a video feed, I would say the screen did update with about 80% of the pictures it was taking. So every few seconds I could see the picture it just took on the screen. Not great but better than staying completely black. Figured I would add this detail in case others in the same situation want to still give it a shot, at least I got some kind of image back from the drone. And the pictures it took during the mission were fine.

Not just the video though Jim, I get a long list of errors like "No telemetry" "Not connected to RC" even though the controller is controlling the drone normally. Oh and no video feed, basically not working at all.

I could live without the video as long as it can fly the route and trigger the camera.

It sounds like maybe you are running into some of the issues described here: https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052025194-Why-is-Dronelink-unable-to-connect-to-my-drone-

How do I go on about using a custom video encoder? Where do I set/change this?

Option 1 would mean that we (Dronelink) would have to write custom code, which isn't happening.

Any reason why you won't be doing that?  Can you point us to where we can do it on our own?

DJI has basically abandoned MSDKv4 in favor of the non-backwards compatible MSDKv5, and we are focusing the majority of our development efforts on the new SDK as it supports the newer drones which are used by more users. If you want to try to code a solution to this problem, it would need to be in the DJI vendor adapter for the UI components: https://github.com/dronelink/dronelink-dji-ui-android
