Return to home accident

Gabriel Schwind
I was out free flying the other day and the battery was getting low, the system initiated the return to home problem was I was in an area with a lot of obstacles and it wouldn't let me take primary control of the drone and it caused an accident resulting in chopped prop and a snapped camera gimble, is there any settings that I can change to give me primary control of the aircraft

Which drone ? It works the same as DJI app even though it’s an automated mission app. Your RTH altitude will be the same as what you have set in the DJI app. All those settings for RTH altitude, Max altitude, Max distance, RTH state etc., stick across apps. Meaning, whatever you set those parameters at in the DJI app will be the same for DL app.  Also depending on which drone, you should be able to pause, stop RTH and take manual control of aircraft and manually fly it or ascend up.

I just tried my first map, and I also had the same experience using DJI mini 2.  Even though it is set to return to home in both the DJI app and Dronelink, it just stopped and then the Dronelink app closed on its own when the fight was complete.

I had lost sight of the drone as it was a 5 acres and at the furthest point.  I restarted Dronlink but there was nothing to do, then I started the DJI App and pressed return to home, and finally, it started to return.  Luckily I was in an open field and it still had a line of sight.

This is too risky to use in a real application.  I had planned to use this on my property, where it is like a forest of 5 acres.  I would have no way to return home, as it would have no line of sight.  I am going to get a refund. This is not usable if return to home does not work.

May have been a device issue. DL needs a powerful device which is stated in their info. Anything is possible but more then likely the something orther then DL app.

You can always switch the controller out of normal mode to Cine or Sport and you automatically have manual control. Also the RTH button on the controller is fixed and will override based on DJI Fly settings.

@ Mike It is not a device issue, using iPhone XR with the latest firmware.  Not sure what George K is referring to, what good would that do if you are not in the line of sight?

… er, it returns home even if you can’t see it? The OP said he needed a way to manually control and RTH. If RTH altitude is set safe shouldn’t be a problem?

@B Lang did you have it to set to return home in the plan settings once the mission had completed

@ Martin, Yes, the return home was set in the mission prior to and after the mission.

Even if the app closed you can still press RTH on controller and it will return. The app is not necessary to fly the drone. Obviously lose a ton of functions, camera feed etc, but it will still fly. You just need to make sure the RTH altitude is set higher then anything in the area.

Also, RTH does work so it’s not risky as you stated. DL is not some cheap little app and I’m sure Something else happened. Can you please share the plan ?

Hi B Lang. Regarding DL app not initiating RTH. The only thing I can think of is when the app closed it may not have been able to initiate the RTH since the app is sending the command and obviously needs to be running. If so then the drone will just hover since there are no commands being sent. Eventually it will hit the low battery warning and then return unless you manually hit RTH or take control.

Suggest you delete the DL and reinstall. It should not be closing down. Also do you know for sure if any other apps were running in background on the phone ? If so that can be an issues as DL states it is a resource intensive app.

I hope you don’t give up so soon.  I believe DL is an incredible app and has so many functions and abilities. This issue is not normal and I believe if you give it more time and test maps, paths, orbits you will be amazed on what DL can do. I’ve been using DL since December, 2020 with my MA2 and other then minor issues which were corrected quickly it’s been flawless. I’ve flown over 1,100 minutes of flights with DL and still going. Hope this helps and Good luck….

Also make sure all apps are force closed so nothing is still running. Then shut down device and restart fresh. Some say it doesn’t matter but I’ve found that after using the device for awhile and running any other apps, doing video editing etc., it does get bogged down sometimes. I always start with a fresh reboot and I’ve had no issues with my iPad Mini 5 which has the same A12 Hexa core chip as the iPhone XR.

@ Mike, I always close any running apps, just habit.  The only app that was running at the time was DL, other than some normal background services that are usually running.

I will test it again, and do a fresh reboot before attempting as you suggest. Thanks for your responses.
