Feedback for Beta (Mini 3 Pro) - Performance & Stability Non-flight regime - UPDATED!!!! NOW FLOWN

Armond M

Hello All:

I wanted to give some feedback as to non-flight regime software stability and performance status during my navigating of the Dronelink software while connected to my DJI Mini 3 Pro.  Hardware/software listed below (as of 4-25-2023):

  • DJI Mini 3 Pro with v01.00.0600
  • RC-N1 Controller with v1.10.1
  • Moto G Power 128GB running Android 12
  • 128GB SD Card in both the Smartphone and Drone
  • Dronelink DJI App (for modern DJI drones)  v4.6.0 (254) Kernal 4.6.0

PLEASE NOTE:  I HAVE NOT TEST FLOWN THE DRONE - THIS IS A STATIC TEST AND I'VE NOT PAID FOR HOBBYIST OR PROFESSIONAL ACCESS.  I was simply trying to connect my drone to the Dronelink app to get telemetry, camera image, and play with settings.

Issues Detected:

  • Once connected to the drone and loading up the telemetry/map interface, going from menu to menu (camera, gimbal, etc.) causes a crash.  This seemed to happen ONLY WHEN I was connected to a wifi source other than the drone's.  In other words, if I disconnect from wifi sources (say my home's wifi) and the phone is only connected to the drone's wifi, this crash does not occur.  So make sure you are not connected to any other wifi source when connected to the drone via Dronelink's app. This also must be done in order to use DJI's own Quick Transfer of files from the drone to your phone.
  • DJI's Fly app definitely needs to be killed before using the Dronelink app.  This has been already indicated but I can confirm it as well.
  • Dronelink's app needs to be killed before using the DJI Fly app.  If I do not kill the Dronelink app, DJI's Fly app will load but will not connect to the drone.  The introduction screen showing the Connection Guide, Album, SkyPixel, etc. will only load and the drone will not connect to the DJI Fly app.

Interestingly, Map Pilot Pro also makes an app similar to Dronelink but I cannot use it as their website indicates the following:

  • DJI has limited the Enterprise version to only support Android versions 7 through 11.

I can verify this to be the case with their app because as soon as the MPP app detects my drone, a message stating that my phone isn't compatible pops up (and indeed I am running Android 12).

I find it odd that DJI would not support the latest Android versions.  Had I know, I'd not have updated my phone.

This is for now. I am hoping to purchase the Hobbyist Premium plan or become a Beta tester.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Alright - I voiced my opinion today - I believe the more people that voice their opinions, perhaps then they will get a move on this a little bit faster !

Alright, I voiced my concern at the sdk-forum.dji-DJI-Developer-Support

based on "mini3pro with msdk 5.3 crashes app from time to time"

They have replied back and they would like to know which crashes and in which version
(MSDK V5.3.0 / V5.4.0 or Other) - since I'm not a developer/programmer then how would be the best way to respond back to the DJI team?

    Thank you

DJI reached out and said they will be starting a beta of 5.5.0 soon - which adds proper support for Android 13. Hopefully it will resolve the crashes.

Hi. Yesterday I tried to do an autonoumos flight with the Mini 3 Pro linked to my RC Pro for the first time and it didn't go very well.

I followed all the instructions on the website and managed to connect the drone to the controller, except it only works the first time you turn the drone on after installation. Every time I would change a battery, turn the drone off and on, or even just close and reopen the app, it would disconnect. The only way of making it work again was to uninstall and reinstall every time, which is very inconvenient.

The issue persists in different Mini 3 Pros. How can I fix this? Thank you!

Mi sembra peggiorato rispetto a prima.

Do you have DJI Fly set to automatically open when the drone connects? If so can you disable that?

Mi sembra peggiorato rispetto a prima.

Nothing has changed. We are still waiting for DJI's fix.

Without SD card, the app cannot use the built-in RAM. It says "the SD card is full" so you can't take pictures at all...

FAUSTO CAPALBO  The no Wi-Fi or cellular service is not why the app crashes. I mentioned that to you to see if the “no connection” message as you stated would go away of turned off. Completely separate issues. So until DJI fixes the crashing issues there going to continue and Jim has posted updates awhile ago in this thread and still waiting on DJI. Once DJI has updated it only then can DL do their part and I’m sure they will post it.

As I stated before, you don’t need any Wi-Fi or cellular service if you download the plans for off-line. If you do this then you can turn off cellular and Wi-Fi as it is not needed and maybe the message won’t pop up. It is possible that message is due to the service dropping in and out while flying the mission and it will not effect the flight.

Just got the Mail from DJI that they released MSDK 5.5.0 with adaption to Android 13!

I just received the same message and spotted this in the dev portal.
I cannot wait to test the adapted version of Dronelink to the new SDK version. So far I have not really had any large issues besides the crashes. Fingers crossed!

Just for clarification- I do not (and never used before) use Android 13 with dronelink, BUT it keeps crashing on Android 12 and 11 constantly, so I gave up testing for now.

How can my crashes be fixed by the DJI update?

Tim Legler, I'd guess that the new SDK would support all versions of android supported under the the previous SDK, up to and including 13

Martin Reading for sure it will- but it should have supported older android versions already earlier- so that update will not fix the crashes i have on 11 and 12.

How can my crashes be fixed by the DJI update?

You need to install 266 (available for download now), which has 5.5.0 baked in. We recommend a full delete / reinstall for this one to give us the best testing data.

so that update will not fix the crashes i have on 11 and 12.

It is likely the same thing causing the issues even on those versions of Android.

I've flown the latest app. Stability of the app during flight was good (Mini 3 Pro on Pixel 7 Pro). But I actually did have the app force quit once with the drone on the ground as I was loading (reloading actually) a mission.

The Pixel 7 had no issues showing the live video? Are you able to reproduce the crash?

No trouble with video on Pixel 7 Pro with 266. Never had trouble with it on the 5.4.0 builds either.

Just saw the second part of your question, could I recreate the crash. I didn't try at the time, but if it happens again I'll try to recreate it.

Bad news. Just got back from a mapping run and had the app force quit during flight. Could not reconnect the phone to the drone in-flight and I had to RTH from the remote. When I restarted the app in flight I got the message "DJI SDK Initializing"

I will test it today with my Fold Z4.
Pixel phones do have some stability issues and crashes all over the place, that could be another problem.

had the app force quit during flight

Did it happen just once, or are you able to consistently reproduce it?

As you can probably imagine, losing contact with the drone and being unable to reconnect is somewhat unnerving, so I didn't seek to recreate the problem. I understand reproducibility is the key to being able to understand what's happening, but at the same time I'm uninterested in losing the drone.

That being said, there's not really anything to reproduce. I was watching the flight progress through a mapping routine and all of a sudden the app wasn't there. I wasn't interacting with the phone at all at the time. Do you get a crash log?

so I didn't seek to recreate the problem.

May want to leave the beta test.

Do you get a crash log?

    Yes.

I just came back from a test map mission. Had some issues where the app crashed with the drone connected but on ground. One crash during the mapping mission and manual exposure settings.
After switching to auto exposure it worked as a charm, expect another crash in idle after switching batteries.

The way I see it I've done a fair amount of testing with this and previous beta builds in a way that benefits your for profit company with performance data. All the while I'm paying you for the privilege of it. Seems fair that I get to decide my risk tolerance for myself?

Guess it wasn't my crashy unstable Pixel phone then? 😉

Of course, I just meant that if you are at the edge of your tolerance, you may decide to stop testing and that is perfectly ok!

Unfortunately we are at the mercy of DJI here.

This is the kind of remark that must really challenge the developers' patience. You're very clearly using beta software. I get it, we all want the new functionality. But if you're only in it for the new functionality and not to help test things then at a minimum please consider not getting in the dev's way. And if you're not comfortable getting your drone home safely without a phone attached you probably shouldn't be using this anyway.

And to the devs: thank you so much for all your hard work!

Is there a way to provide you with logs? I just found some in .\CSDK\Logs from the last test runs.

You're very clearly using beta software.

Obviously. I'm not acting entitled at all. I understand the software may not work. I also reserve the right to decide my level of involvement in the testing when I'm paying for it.

not getting in the dev's way

How am I getting in the way? I was the first to report experience on the newest build.

And if you're not comfortable getting your drone home safely without a phone attached you probably shouldn't be using this anyway.

This is the first time I've been unable to reconnect to the drone at all after an app crash. Using the RTH functionality on the drone as a last ditch effort reduces my options to safely return the drone to one. With previous crashes I had more options to return the drone. Again, I get to decide my own risk tolerance.

Tried build 267 with a Pixel 5. Same mapping course as yesterday, with another force quit in flight. On this phone I also have the DJI Fly app installed, so I feel more comfortable bringing the drone home by switching to that app in the event the Dronelink app force quits.

I'm also getting the Initializing DJI SDK message as discussed in the other thread, where the app won't connect to the drone. My only experience getting the app to work in this case is to restart the phone with the Drone and the RC already powered on and communicating.
