Is the Google Play store really necessary? What feature is being supported by that and can we do without it? I gave up on the Crystalsky for DL because of these annoying messages.

Yes. If you click on the create button and choose the type of mission you want to create. However, I don't believe you can setup "on the fly" missions without the drone being connected.
