Mapping performance with Mavic Mini is unimpressive, off-course, loss of connection, stalled in mission execution.

Eric S

"Mapping performance with Mavic Mini is unimpressive, off-course, loss of connection, stalled in mission execution, ge etc... Generally not able to complete missions"

I just want to understand it right and would appreciate input from others who have flown the Mavic Mini and other models like Mini 2, Mini 3 etc...

I am not certain because I have flown the mini with other apps with waypoint missions and have not experienced these types of problems.

Is the Mavic Mini simply not up to the job?

I want to understand if the problem is with the drone or with the software.

I've flown quiet a few mapping missions with my mini2 without any problems like you describe above, here's the output of one of the 2 mapping missions I flew yesterday, could you possibly share one of the missions that has been giving you trouble, also what phone/tablet are you flying with and is the drones firmware up to date with no hacks installed?

The mini is a great learning machine. Assuming you are using a device with sufficient cpu power and given the right distance and environmental conditions, it will produce excellent results. If any of those things are not true your results will not be good.

The design of the Dronelink app requires a fast device. I have been flying a mini and recently found that the tablet I have been using which has delivered an acceptable user experience no longer does so and some missions fail outright. C'est la vie.  New tablet arrives today but the world's fastest device can't compensate for a mission plan that covers too much area being flown in high winds.

Post a link to the mission - that would help people to see if what you are asking is not going to work.

    For example:

    • if you set the speed to 25mph, you're probably going to get off-course messages because it can't maintain the speed it needs and so falls behind where it is meant to be
    • If you are flying far away, or in an area with a lot of radio interference, you're going to get disconnect messags.

Thank you for your feedback, all of the above makes sense.

I think I am experiencing issues related to these top 3:

    • Expectations – trying to run the mission too quickly
    • Connection & interference – have had more luck in less 'noisy' areas
    • Environmental factors – wind pushing the drone around

With that acknowledged, only 1 of the 3 can be resolved easily by flying slower.

My question for anyone who may have flown Mini before upgrading does a Mini 2 or other drone perform better than your past experience with the Mini?

Ken Kroeker is this what you meant by saying that the mini is a great "learning" machine. (I couldn't agree more btw).
Martin Reading did you have experience with Mini 1 before your success with Mini 2?

If I upgrade will I generally be able to run missions with greater success?

Eric S, I've only ever flown mini 2, it would still be good if you could share one of these missions

All good info and I think you have your questions answered. I’ll just give some more info since I have a MM and a MA2. There is not a huge difference between the MM and M2 when it comes to performance. A bit more power with some additional speed on the M2 but there both still under 250 grams and the wind will make it more difficult than the larger more powerful drones. Obviously the Ocusync is much better with the M2 and if flying farther away or if in a congested area with interference it would help. I don’t fly many missions with my MM since I have the MA2 but it has always worked great overall. I’ve flown at 1,500 feet away on a 10 minute mission without issues with connection. Off-course has happen due to the drones speed and since I’m in a windy area I adjusted to about 12 to 15 mph and success. You just need to learn the limitations as mentioned above. Slow down the drones speed to stay on course. Fly a bit higher or in a less congested area to keep connection. The connection between the drone and controller is the same as when using DJI app. Depending on the size it can struggle with larger maps. If not using a newer more powerful device it may be struggling to process the mission.

As stated above, can you share the mission ? What make and model device are you using ? A lot of knowledgeable pilots here which can help. If you do share the plan I may be able to fly it here just to see if any issues with my MM. Of course a lot may depend on what the plan looks like. Good luck.

Eric, I had the MM and then upgraded to the MM2. Big difference between them. In urban areas the MM suffered from interference that the MM2 simply doesn't get effected by.

I have run various map missions and the MM2 is much better. I personally find it handle wind better, but a bigger drone will still hand it better again.

Reducing the speed can help you, ensuring you have a high spec device running dronelink , but electronic noise and bad weather will still cause you issues. a MM3pro should be even better theoretically.
