Mission Stopped because of drone too far off course (altitude)

Cody Bentley

Hello!

I am mapping some forested units (some trees about 160 ft tall) on pretty steep terrain and I have been having issues with dronelink stopping the mission because the drone is going too far off course. I was under the impression that with the starter package you get terrain follow. I have it enabled in my mission and I'm flying at 300 ft, 70%/80% with a motion error tolerance of 30 ft altitude and 75 ft distance. I have had a lot of trouble especially with unit 41 (topo map and DEM map attached). Can anyone help with this or provide pointers? It's for my Master's project so it's really important to me.

Thank you!

I usually get that when the winds are very high, either because it is being blown off course, or because it can't fly fast enough to match the expected capture.

This will depend on your drone.  For example, you have the speed set to 20mph.  If your drone's max speed is 30mph and it is heading into a 15mph wind, it won't be able to reach 20mph and you will get an off-course error.

I would suggest checking this high wind tolerance box and/or lowering the max speed and seeing if that improves things.

    I should've mentioned i'm using a Mavic 2 Pro and a Galaxy S2 Tablet android device.

I didn't use a kestrel to get wind speed but weather underground was showing only 2 mph. It's weird that my max speed was set to 20 - I thought it was 10 but maybe that was just the approach..

Thanks for the suggestions Barry - I will drop the speed and check high wind tolerance. Maybe I should drop the altitude to 200 or 250? Should I increase the motion error tolerance? Adjust the flight path again?

I don't think the altitude would change anything.  Just make those two changes and see how it goes.

The speed is in the component.  There is another speed in the settings, which is sort of the default but will be overridden by the component settings.

try this mission on a new mobile devise, like your phone (if it's newer and more powerful than your S2). The S2 is an old device and doesn't have a fast processor in it, FYI :)

In some cases altitude may make a difference. Winds can be much faster higher up. You might want to look at one of the utilities available for this, like UAV Forecast (for IOS). I have issues with this on occasion too, but can go back next day and fly the same mission with no issues.

I have experienced this same issue "Mission Stopped because of drone too far off course". I don't remember it saying "(Altitude or Distance, but I suspect Distance is the error)". I was just flying a WayPoint (video capture) mission at a flat 150' altitude, nothing specially complicated. I'm using a Mavic Air 2S (maximum flight speed of 42 mph) and a Galaxy S20 FE phone android device. I have the Motion Error Tolerance set to 45ft Distance and 45ft Altitude. I had my max speed set to 30mph and could not stay on course into a 12mph headwind. Any suggestions?

Sometimes you just have to persevere like i did with this mission yesterday

max flight speed set at 20MPH, flying mini2, and all but engagement 12 message were drone to far off course

Wasn't surprised with these winds though, but typical of Mini 2 it pulled through and produced some good results

"I had my max speed set to 30mph and could not stay on course into a 12mph headwind. Any suggestions?"

Your flight speed is far too high.  Drop your speed to 15mph and try again.  Another alternative would be to make sure that you have the setting for high wind tolerance turned on.  It's in the advanced section so you need to expend to see that.

But frankly, you are not going to get quality results at 30mph with the Air 2S - the photos will be blurry IMHO.

I have a 5MF video coming out tomorrow where I am showing poor quality results from an Air 2S at 15mph and 185ft.

Hey Cody. Good suggestion given but just a couple more comments to digest. Most of the time it is due to the speed set to fast as mentioned. In almost all situations you need to slow down the drones speed. Most of my MA2 mission are set no more then about 15 to 18 mph. If I measure the actual wind speed at my location at 15 mph or more I slow the max speed down to about 10 to 12. Mph. Many variables like the speed, wind, angle of accent etc. You can also change the motion tolerance to more then the 75’ default but it still may fall behind on the path and error off-course. I haven’t had that error for probably 1-1/2 years since I run lower speeds when it’s windy. Those Apps are OK but no real way to know the actual wind speed unless you use an Anemometer. I’ve noticed the apps can be off anywhere from 5 to 10 mph which can make a difference flying missions. I purchased one for about $15 and it’s accurate compared to my personal home weather station. It’s a cheap investment for your drone just like so many other accessories and very small and lightweight. Good luck. Sir. Enjoy.

Also your plan link is indicating invalid if you want to try sending again.
