Setting Gimbal angle in a Waypoint Mission

Julian Perry

Hi there,

I'm planning to take some more drone footage (Mavic Mini) to add to a 3D model and have created an arc to take more photos as shown below.

However, I am unable to get the gimbal to 45 degrees during Preview despite inserting a command to do so; it stays at about 25-30 degrees. While it obeys the angle set in the 'Destination' settings, it doesn't seem to elsewhere.

Please advise.

Thanks

It would appear that the Point of Interest takes priority on where the camera is pointed and hence the gimbal angle. If so can it be overridden?

You could do away with all the poi, set the gimble pitch to 45° and drone heading to say 80° to the path on the first marker

    That's a good idea. thanks

POI has the advantage of keeping the drone facing that area in addition to controlling the gimbal.  I'm not sure why you need 45deg but if, as I assume, you just want it pitched lower you can achieve a similar result by changing the POI altitude offset to a negative number.  That would tell the drone the POI is lower than the ground level and it will naturally point the gimbal further down.

Aha, now I see what the offset is for. I have been affecting the gimbal so far by moving the POI closer or further away. :)

Barry has it nailed on offset. 🤙🏼. POI’s will always change a gimbal pitch according to the height and distance. There are so many ways to set up POI and if you don’t already know, you can add additional markers on each POI. This way it will start on the first POI marker and continue to the second marker before transitioning to next. Otherwise it may start transitioning to soon depending on the interpolation settings you have and especially when they are close together. All depends on what effect your looking for. Just some info to consider which may help. Good luck and enjoy…..

Hi there, I am wondering if someone can tell me what I'm missing here. I have a simple waypoint plan that follows a road and I want to set the gimbal pitch to -45 and the gimbal heading to 60. The idea is follow the road and capture the shacks off to the right. In the first waypoint I have -45 / Horizon and 60 / Path. There is a path action between WP A and B with the same values. Other than a bunch of other waypoints with no values set I have nothing else set until a RTH at the very end. No POI's etc
Now, the issue is when I run a preview the camera 'view' is directly forward at -45. Docs suggest the gimbal angle should present correctly in preview so what doesn't it in my case no matter what I change the value to?

You will need to share the plan.

Ok just taken a look and what you need to do is change the gimbal heading to zero, and add a DRONE heading of 60deg to the path, and that will achieve what you after

Yeah the things like gimbal heading and gimbal roll would only work if you have a drone which supports those functions. There are many settings and functions in the app that are specific to a particular drone. As Martin stated it’s drone heading, not gimbal heading. Also you already have the gimbal pitch at -45° at waypoint “A” so you don’t even need the path action so you can delete it. Then change the drone heading at waypoint “A” from 45° to 60°.

Thanks a lot for the feedback gents - it works now. But I'm curious - the preview does not know what drone you are using right ... so why does it not work in the preview? Obviously it may not work in reality, I get that now.

FWIW I have a Phantom 4 Pro V2 and a Mini 4 Pro. How do I know what is / is not supported - trial and error, or is there some science?

Sorry for the questions but I only just started playing around with Dronelink - its awesome but I have a lot to learn!

    Cheers

    -A

In regards knowing what functions are supported, you will need to check the DJI specs on each drone to see what the firmware allows. If it can’t be done in the DJI app then it more than likely will not work with DL. There are many functions that DJI puts in their SDK which won’t work with any drone or the app. Jim has said that DJI seems to throw a lot of commands in there without knowing if they are even usable. An example is all the video resolutions which there are a ton of. However, most cannot be used because no drone has those resolutions. I know, it’s madness. Lol……

Crikey that makes things pretty hit and miss!
Thanks again for the feedback gents.
