Using Dronelink for map making. Why? What's the use-case?

Mick Porter

It must be important because a lot of you are doing it.

Is there a recreational/fun aspect, or is it work-related?

Just curious.  Forgive a newbie his ignorance.

For myself, mostly fun. Just like to make big, or 3D, photos of things. However I also do volunteer work for a nature conservancy. They have a lot of property. Last week I flew a mission and made a map of a 20 acre field where they were going to do a controlled burn. They performed the burn, then I went back and flew the same mission. They now have a detailed "map" or photos of the field before the burn, and after to show the percentage of burn that was achieved. (While 100% would be the target, and nice, it doesn't always happen, especially with wet ground in the spring.)

I will also be making some of a field where they are proposing putting a dam to flood the field to create a pond for wildlife. So things like that!

I use map-like skills to do documentaries and find beautiful visions in God's eyes.

I don't do any 3d or compose the big map.

I was hoping to give it a try this weekend just gone, as friend of mine is buying a house on an estate which is being built, so i was going to try and get a version now, then another when she moves in round about September, however it was too gusty to put the mini2 up, but we are back up in a couple of weeks time, so maybe try then

I generate orthophotos which I use to update OpenStreetMap.  It's not work related but I enjoy contributing to an open project the provides a high quality maps.  I use OSM derived maps a lot for trail running and mountain biking.

The orthophotos aren't published in OSM, they are used as a basis to edit OSM.  They do get published to OpenAerialMap though.
