Unable to load flight waypoint

Emanuele Ferrari

Good morning,
I use the AIR 3.
I created the flight plan attached, but the mission doesn't start and DJI Fly gives the following message: "RC signal weak. Unable to load flight waypoint."
Thinking it was a connection issue, I created a similar mission directly in DJI Fly on the same site, which works fine.
Could it be a problem with the number of waypoints (494) generated during the conversion?
Thank you.

Does it work if you try a smaller mission?

I created a mission with 354 waypoints and it works fine.
    Is there a waypoint limit?

    That’s a question for DJI.

    OK, thanks
Have you by any chance tested the functionality by deleting intermediate waypoints in the file created after conversion?

If you are using the DJI RC2 controller there is a limit with how many waypoints. However, there is no set maximum number as It will depend on how many waypoints, amount of waypoint actions etc.. RC 2 controllers work well overall but are considered a medium performance device. Other pilots which use a modern hardware high performance Android Tablet or iPad with the RC-N2 have run missions with 700 to 800 waypoints. I’m fairly sure this is why.

I'm using an iPad with an RC-N2.
The only action is orienting the camera for nadir flight.

I'm trying to split the mission and see the maximum number of waypoints it can load.

I'm also trying to delete the waypoints generated during the conversion; when flying nadir (and controlling the automatic shutter directly from DJI Fly), only a few waypoints are needed on the straight trajectory.

Good idea to split them up and/or deleting some before exporting. 👍🏼

    Good morning,
I tried deleting several waypoints, and now there are 275, but it still gives the message "RC signal weak. Unable to load flight waypoint."
Thinking it was a problem with the route length (4.4 km), I tried creating a route over 6 km directly in DJ FLY, and it loaded correctly.
I retried a mission with 354 waypoints and a total distance of 2.9 km, and it worked fine.
I can't figure out what the problem with the loading failure might be.

After several tests, I'm almost certain the problem is with the conversion.
In the mission, I left Flight Direction = 0°; simply setting 1° was enough and the kmz was correctly uploaded to DJI FLY.
I assume this applies to all the other parameters.

Can you share a link to a mission plan?

I have been fighting with getting my waypoint flights to work for most of the day. I found this thread and tried setting the Flight Direction to 1 and it works like a charm now. There is a problem with having the flight direction at 0 apparently. This should be addresses. Using a mini 4 pro with the RC controller.

Thank you for unknowingly helping me.

    I uploaded this link:
    - smat-strada-castello (mission that doesn't work)
    - smat-castello (mission that works)

Please try a smaller area or increase the spacing between the waypoints.

I moved your DJI Waypoints plan to my location and exported the KMZ into the Fly app. It loaded without any issue in about 2 seconds. I then executed the mission and it flew without any issue with my iPad 11 Pro, 5th gen. As mentioned before the amount of waypoints along with the size, (length of the mission) may not load or fly with a device which may not have the processing power. Since I had no issues I believe it may be your iPad. What specific iPad are you using ? Not that it makes any difference but im using the same Air 3.

It looks like your plan was converted with the default 25’ spacing which isn’t needed. Before finishing the conversion change the spacing from the default of 25’ to about 50’ or more. At 50’ spacing it should cut the number roughly in about half. I never use the 25’ spacing and usually set to about 100’ or so and the path is still straight. When you change the spacing the plan will adjust to show the change so you will see if it is still straight and then finish the conversion. As long as you don’t increase the spacing amount too much the path will remain straight. This way the actual DJI Waypoints converted plan will have far less waypoints and then you can export the KMZ with the smaller number of them. I’d first convert the plan to a DJI Waypoints and change the spacing to 50’ and then export the KMZ and try loading it. If it loads then I would think it should fly the mission.

Since the photo captures are not taken at each waypoint it doesn’t matter how many there are or where they are because the photos are captured at the interval time you set it to in the Fly app. Hope this helps. Enjoy.

The flight plan I shared is the one that works, and if you look, the direction isn't perfectly north.
I deleted the one that's not working, but it's still available here.

    (smat-strada-castello---dji-waypoints.kmz)
If you can, try setting up a flight plan where Flight Direction = 0° to see if you have the same problem.
I don't think it's a problem with the mission length or number of waypoints; I've tried other, larger missions (with Flight Directions other than 0°) and it works.
    I use an iPad 12.

I did another test by creating a fairly large mission (10.8 ha, 85%-75% overlap).
I didn't change any other settings, and it generated 517 waypoints.

The upload to DJI FLY was successful, but when the mission started, the message "RC signal weak. Unable to load flight waypoints" appeared.

Directly in DJI FLY, I manually changed the orientation, applying it to all waypoints, and the mission started.

    I'm attaching the link.

Can you share the original plan before conversion that is working, and also one before conversion that doesn't work so I can test the difference?

The mission I attached is the one created with Dronelink; I made the modification directly on DJI Fly.

I just ran the one you sent on Google drive which you said failed and it loaded and flew without issues. Not sure why it doesn’t work.

    Thank you for your tests.
So far, the only explanation I've been able to find is that Flight Direction = 0°.
It could be that by moving the flight plan to your position and using imperial units (I believe), the values aren't exactly 0, and that's enough for DJI Fly to work.
In other missions (of similar size), I've never had any problems, but they were all with Flight Directions other than 0°.
I don't think it's a problem with the number of waypoints because DJI Fly imports them correctly.
    I'll do some more tests.

Apple made an iPad 10, 11 & 12.9 but not a 12 so which specific model is it. I m just curious to look up the hardware specs. I’m sure it has nothing to do why you’re having the flight direction issue but it could be an issue with larger plans not loading or not executing.

As far as the flight direction, 0° is North so whether it’s set to Imperial or metric it doesn’t affect the compass direction so that’s not why I could fly it.

I did some investigation and check your shared plan you sent on Google drive and noticed you had it set to 1° which is why it worked for me. So I set up a my own mapping plan in DL which is always set to 0.0° flight direction. When I tried to load it I got the same error. I think it could be a DJI Waypoints problem, not the DL conversion but anything is possible. For now I’d just set it to 1° since that will not affect the mission and easily done by changing it before conversion. You can select any waypoint in the Fly app and click heading and then change to follow path. Either way it’s easy to get it work. Enjoy….

    Good morning, Mike,
I'm glad you got the same error message, but only because it means the problem is almost certainly with DJI Fly's reading of waypoints with a flight direction of 0°, not with the number of waypoints generated or the size of the mission!
It's absolutely not a problem to set the flight direction to 1° (I think even 0.5° should work fine).
    Thanks for the tests.
    Have fun too!

In the waylines.wpml (inside the kmz), if you manually replace all the code that looks like this:

    <wpml:waypointHeadingAngle>0</wpml:waypointHeadingAngle>

    With this:

    <wpml:waypointHeadingAngle>0.0</wpml:waypointHeadingAngle>

    Does it work?

Jim. I finally figured out how to edit the code with an app and changed all the lines of code which were 0 to 0.0. When I click to replace the dummy plan it doesn’t say Adjust and Open, it just shows a blank map. It may be something I did wrong but I tried several times.

I did some research with the exporting of a KMZ with two other apps and when imported into the Fly app I checked and all the waypoints and they are set to “follow course” instead of degrees based on north. If I just select a waypoint and then change the heading in the Fly app to follow course and apply to all waypoints the plan loads and flys. Is it possible to change the exported KMZ so it sets all waypoints to follow course ? Maybe this will help.

I tried the replacement, but it didn't work.

It sounds like it's a bug with how DJI interprets the heading mode, so you will have to do the offset work-around for now.
