Possible Orbit issue

Bob Scheffler

I was flying my mini yesterday using my new S21 phone.  I had completed a generated mission which went flawlessly (except birds attacking).  I landed the drone and changed the battery as it was a pretty long mission. I decided to do an orbit and created the starting point and ending etc.  I tried to launch the mission and I received an error msg. something in the line of, "cannot connect to aircraft".  I tried launching a couple times and then I rcvd. the sound in the RC which says the aircraft is about to return home.  I was only about 100 feet from the drone and the drone was an estimated 50 feet in air.  My RTH is set at 140 feet.  When the RTH was automatically started it did not go up to 140 feet, it started to drop as if it was performing an emergency landing.  I had a little control of the drone but it was a constant struggle to keep the drone up and moving back to me. I was in a little used parking lot but there is an occasionally moving car.  The drone flew right in front of the only moving car and landed a couple feet away from it undamaged.  A little scary though, even for the driver.  I was using Dronelink and did not even turn on DJI Fly.  I have a feeling that this is an issue with DJI am I correct?  If so any ideas on why this would happen.  I had a similar experience probably a year ago and the DJI forum said that it could not happen.  I started thinking that it was my fault and I did something wrong, but I know yesterday I did nothing wrong.  Any ideas?

I have a feeling that this is an issue with DJI am I correct?

RTH behavior is all handled by DJI in the firmware.

it was performing an emergency landing

If you toggled the hardware RTH button and it did not give you full control ("it was a constant struggle") then it sounds like it was critical battery level and doing exactly that.

I had just changed the battery and that was the first thing I checked when I got the drone back. Definitely a DJI issue. I will check the flight logs
