follow mode test

Bob Scheffler

I previously reported possible issues with the option on the follow mode.  I tried some more testing today and I tried at least 6 times and could not get the follow mode to even work.  I finally had to change the battery so I shut everything down, even on my phone, and re-tried with a fresh battery.  It worked.  I noticed one thing different, when it worked I received the msg. about the altitude, when it was not working I did not get that message.  It seems as though something was running in the background of the phone which was interfering with the Dronelink program.  I tested program with no options and all options and worked with both. It appears that if you choose one option (the first) you have to pick them all, is this true.  Also when I was operating with all options when I sticked up the AC just spun uncontrollably until the RTH button was hit.

Can you post any screen recordings of these issues?

The only screen recording that would show anything is when the AC started spinning wildly. Would the DJI flight recording help?

Not really. Just needing to find a way to reproduce what you are doing.

Jim I am new to uploading stuff to You tube but I tried it.  The video is the end of a follow mission where it kinda went wrong.  I had just returned from driving with my car and the drone following.  I had checked of the ability to use the stick and I tried using them and directed the drone to go up and it spun wildly.  I recovered by using the RTH button and there was no problem.  This is the link  https://youtu.be/3bDYx-yz7dk  let me know if it works.  I also found that there is a video on you tube on how to use the Beta missions but I noticed the screen on the RC in the video is quite different than what I see.  In a previous post I had said that the mission box gets in the way of trying to center the drone on something, this becomes obvious when I put a shot of the 2 screens. I could only post one picture here, I will try to do it on youtube.

The screen in the video is different because it is iOS, and your Android is tiny. The YouTube video is marked as private - you need to at least change it to unlisted. The Dropbox link just goes to their homepage...

I just made the video public.  It is under  "follow s", I have not been able to re-create that issue.  I was flying in follow mode and when I returned to my driveway I hit stick up and the drone as you can see in the video spun wildly.  I forget how I got out of it.  Either I hit RTH or shut everything off and took control with DJI Fly.  And as far as my using an Android while the in the video he is using iOS, I don't think that explains a whole different screen that I do not have named "input summary".

Did some more flying the last couple days and noticed a couple more things.

    1) On the "Enable smart return home" option I tried it in both modes, on and off.  I purposely let the battery run down and the drone returned home both times.  The tutorial video I watched (which I can't find on youtube anymore) the author made a good point in turning it off in case you were too far from your RTH site.

    2) I enabled altitude tracking and it worked the opposite of what I thought.  I started at 130 feet and walked up a 20 foot hill and the AC dropped to an altitude of 80 feet.

    3) Today I tried flying the AC without picking any options and I repeatedly got the same message, "Unknown Command Type".  I am pretty sure that I had flown it previously without any options picked.

Good feedback Bob.  I'm sure Jim will take a look at this.

BTW, here is the video you were looking for - still up there.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIjIb9roRjs&t=2s

Thanks Eric, am I correct that if I enable altitude tracking the drone should go up as I go up?

    Jim try this link

128 is currently the latest, and if you saw Unknown Command Type is means you were still on 127. You appear to be flying directly above yourself in the video, which means that as the drone moves slightly to the right or left, the actual angle from you to the drone might change pretty drastically from one direction to the opposite (if you consider the geometry of the situation). The drone is rotating to keep the nose of the aircraft pointed at you, so it technically is behaving as programmed.

We might consider turning off rotation when the drone is within a few feet (horizontally) of you.

Altitude tracking should move the drone higher assuming your are moving higher (and vice versa). Can you post a screen recording showing it doing the opposite?

    1)  Why does drone always want to return home when running out of power.  I am disabling that option as Eric suggested in his tutorial because if I am 1/2 mile away from my RTH I do want it to go there but it tries.

    2)  As you can see from the spinning drone video, I am standing in one spot and I pushed the stick for the drone to go up and it spun on its axis until I turned DJI Fly back on.

    3)  Latest version?  I have 2.0.0(2127) but when I go to the google store it says I have the latest version.

    4)  Now about the elevation test.  I published the video, it is 13 minutes long but if you do not want to watch it all the elevation change is most obvious about halfway through when I am walking on a sidewalk.  I will give a brief scenario.  I leave my house with the drone at 130 feet.  I go into a baseball field which is at the same elevation.  The field is in a gully so I walk up the driveway for a school increasing my height by a measured 24 feet.  I then walk around the school and go up to a street which is another 10 or 12 feet higher.  I am now about 35 to 40 feet higher than when I started in my backyard.  The whole time that I am walking up the drone is coming down.  The highest point for me but the lowest point for the drone (80 feet) is when I go around the school and go to the sidewalk.  You can see me look up because I am concerned about the height of the drone.  The trees around my house are about 70 to 90 feet tall, I increased my elevation by about 35 to 40 feet, that means to clear the trees on the hill I have to fly at 130 feet.  I have calculated this all out which is why I always fly at the lowest of 130 feet.  When the drone was telling me it was 80 feet above me I manually returned it to 130 feet.  Here is the video:

    1. 127 only had the option to disable Smart Return to Home, which is to say it stops it from automatically initiating RTH based on the home point distance and current battery level. This doesn't matter anymore because we have abandoned this in 128 in favor of dynamic home point.
    2. I understand. If you want to do another test like this, offset the drone at least a few feet to one side and then push up on the left stick and let me know if it still does it.
    3. The google play console is showing that 128 is available for beta testing and our test devices see it, so I'm not sure why you don't see it as an option. Maybe try uninstalling it first?
    4. The video says unavailable - can you make it unlisted?

You have to opt-in to the beta in the Play store.

I have been trying for hours to download the Beta Version again.  All it says is: "Beta signup in progress.  It may take a few minutes."  It's been several hours.  This all started when you said I was getting an error message (unknown command type) because I had version 127 and I needed 128.  When I went to Google Play it would not give me a download option only play.  You said to delete and re-install.  So now I have an even older version 1.7.3 (121).  Is this possibly why I can't download the Beta Version?

Success!  Google Play is blaming Covid for slow downloads.  I just put the phone down and left to do something else so I don't know how long it took but I now have ver. 128 and Beta.

    Great!

We tested altitude tracking yesterday and it worked correctly for us. If you see the issue again, it will help to post a screen share so I can see the Dronelink user interface, and make sure to tap the Mode card so that it is expanded.
