Safety Components

Jade Sambrook

Are there any resources, tutorials or help files regarding what components to add in order to ensure that I get my drone back after a mission or should there be any issues during a mission?

For example, I see that there are components under Drone Commands such as Drone Connection Fail-Safe, Drone Low Battery Warning, Drone Max Altitude, Drone Max Distance, Drone Precision Landing, Drone Return Home Altitude, etc.

But I don't see these being added in any of the dronelink 101 videos on your website or on your YouTube page. For example, how important is it that I add a Drone Connection Fail-Safe? And if I don't add it, does it just RTH by default if there is an issue? Or if the battery is low, will I see this in the Dronelink app or do I need to absolutely add the Drone Low Battery Warning component in order to see such essential info?

I think that a video explaining whether these "safety" components must be added to any mission plan should have been the very first and most important video tutorial made by Dronelink. Because at the end of the day, I just want to know whether I'll be getting my drone back if things go wrong. And as somebody who has just purchased Dronelink, I am not comfortable flying a mission without knowing this vital information.

Again, there are a ton of videos explaining how to add flight paths, and orbits and how to preview your flight mission, etc. But I can't seem to find anything regarding the need (or not) to add "safety" components.

Unless I'm missing something somewhere?

Thank you for letting me know :)

All of the commands just allow you to change settings that are already in the drone's firmware. These settings can also be set manually through the DJI GO / Fly app. If you don't use them it just defaults to what was previously set.

Thank you for the quick reply Jim!

So if I understand correctly, all of the settings (i.e. RTH Altitude) that are set in the DJI Fly app will apply while using the Dronelink app? Out of curiosity, do I need to have the DJI Fly app running simultaneously on my iPhone while I am using Dronelink in order for this to work?

Yes, again these settings are independent of any app that is running, Dronelink or otherwise. If you just turn the drone on and fly it without any app they are still in effect.

Never run DJI Fly in the background.

    Dear Jade,

as a beginner i also had to take my time and make some experience to understand how the drone works with different application (DJI Fly, DroneLink Litchi...). As i understood the result is the next:

    1. The drone is an independent "computer" ant it accepts commands regardless from which application are they coming.

    2. The drone is saving the setup commands and the even you switching off the drone they are kept.

    3. When you start the drone the drone firmware in making checks and setups too. My Mini for example is setting the Transmission frequency to 5.8GHz and Manual selection mode what I really hate and have to change manually with Fly application to 2.4 GHz Auto! All the other main settings remain intakt.

    4. Unfortunately the DroneLink IOS application is not able to check and setup some very important parameters. For example Transmition Frequency, Transmition Mode, RTH altitude... That's why before I am flying a DL mission after switching on the drone I am starting the DJI Fly and I am checkingand setting all safety and setups and than after finishing the DJI Fly application I am starting th Dronelink app.

    5. On the other hand DL is offering on the programming level very good tools to setup your drone during your mission! How am I doing this? here you have it:

First of all I created a new repository for the drone setting. My repository name is "Settings". In setting repository I am storing List components. I have different List components for different video, camera, drone and gimbal settings. If you put some effort to make your settings collected into List components then later you can use in your missions as much times the same setting (consits of several command) as you want. You can find examples in Public repositories.

    Good luck!

Thank you so much Gábor for your awesome and informative message. It is very helpful.

I did go out and fly my first mission the other day, and I loved it. It went very well, except for a few jumpy jitters in the footage when my Mavic Mini is turning corners on the waypoint path.

I did notice in the Dronelink app that all the settings were exactly the same as what I had set in the DJI Fly app (i.e. Max Altitude, Max Distance, etc). And, like you, I did open the DJI Fly app before opening the Dronelink app, although it is not clear to me whether this is absolutely necessary.

I guess in the end, my feedback to Dronelink is that a Dronelink 101 video explaining all of this would have been very helpful in alleviating some of my fears before flying my very first mission. Now I know that it is not absolutely necessary to add certain "safety" components to the mission plan, such as fail-safe, RTH Minimum Altitude, etc. But it would have been very helpful to have this information in the Dronelink 101 videos to avoid having to ask here in the forums.

    Thank you again Gábor.

    Dear Jade,

When you are planning a mission usually you are sitting in a calm environment where you can make the setups according to your wish. The requirement of different mission could be very different so when you start a mission your drone could have such setup what you really need to rewrite. There is two different approach:

    1. Make the setting as a part of mission. In that case i recommend to put your setting into "List" components and use them from the mission plan. In this case you will not use the expensive drone accumulator time for making the setup by hand. On the other hand you can create an independent mission plan just for the settings. After accomplished "setup" mission by DL app you can check all the settings by DJI app and make the setups what you can not do by commands in your setup lists (like Transmission Frequency...).

    2. You will do all the setups by hand using DJI app.

I am using the first solution, but you can choose what is most convenient for you! At the beginning I was playing a lot with independent setup missions and controlled the result by DJI app. Now I believe that DL is working well and I am using the setup lists in different missions.
