when mapping mini 3 pro speeds up and slows down only when taking photos

Grav Kelso

i am running a mini 3 pro on a Samsung a13, the app it self runs great apart from the occasional crash during big missions, one problem i cant figure out is when running mapping missions soon as it starts to take photos the drone speeds up and slows down, set speed is 16  and it speeds up to 35 and down to 7.5 all the way along, capture priority is set to time and if you stop the camera it actually sits right on the set speed perfectly, could be something to do with the gimbal setting maybe, even if i change the speed setting in djifly down to 16 it still goes up to 35 and then down to 7.5 only when taking photos. flying to waypoints and everything else it flies perfectly at set speed, i have tried all different settings flying higher/ slower different over lap.  its using excessive battery, i am using a sandisk extreme pro sd card. i have a public repostitory  with maps @  gavgav79@outlook.com

Grav Kelso, can't open that link, you need to make it a public repository rather than a shared one, also don't forget the mapping component speed is the max speed as the drone has to decelerate as it comes to the turn, and then accelerate once its made the turn, so depending upon the length of the leg of the mission  it may not get to that speed

in the map below, on those lower legs my mini2 might just about hit 19mph before starting to slow down on the turn

sorry i don't think you understood what i was saying, i mean when its flying the waypoints taking the photos the speed is unnaturally going up and down, it actually goes over the max speed, i will make a video tomorrow, when i stop the camera taking photos it tracks along at the set speed exactly, when the camera takes photos it jumps up and down and isn't steady. it is a public repository

before it has taken the 1st photo in a run  its sped up to 35 then down to 7.5, it does that all along, i had a map with 2klm runs and it did it the whole way across.

When I click on your link I get a message that the repository has already been shared

Definitely should not be exceeding the max speed set. It may help Dronelink to know if it happened just once or is it repeatable. If just one time then I put it in the category of “the technology age” and nothing is perfect and sometimes things happen with no explanation. Plan looks fine. I did see you have the camera set to Mini 3 Pro (48 MP). Just be aware that is only for setting the camera sensor and the only way to actually capture 48 MP photos is if you have a professional plan which allows Photo Type, High Resolution”. None of the Hobbyist will allow High Resolution when mapping. Not sure what you mean by setting the speed in DJI Fly app though.  Maybe clarify a bit more. If you were running the DJI Fly App in back ground it could be causing an issue since all apps should be force closed particularly the DJI app. It’s enough to just swap it must be force closed or it may cause additional issues.

Thanks mike, it happens every flight. i am not taking 48mp photos just single, that might be the problem if the sensor is set to mini 3 pro 48mp. ill do a test flight and change the camera setting to mini 3 pro.   fingers crossed. cheers

i just did a quick test and looks the same still speeding up and down during taking of photos. ill take a good video today when the rain stops. when you stop the photos (hit the round circle under the timer 3s)  it flies at correct speed perfectly tracking

Hi Grav Kelso, I've got a couple of copies of yor mission >i might get to fly one of them either sunday or monday with my mini2 and see what happens

I wondering if it is actually flying that speed which is about the very max speed it can do in sport mode and even then the max speed can only be set to 33.6 mph in the app. Especially since the distance is not that long on each leg. It would take time to accelerate up to that high of speed. Possible it is just the telemetry which is reporting incorrectly. Never seen an issue like this in almost three years. Also changing the camera won’t effect the drone speed. I’d go through and refresh the firmware and recalibrate everything just to make sure. Can’t hurt and at least eliminates it as an issue. If you use Airdata for your flights you could check and see what it indicates.

mike, i thought that at first, the drone is physically speeding up and down,i  can see it and hear it, the battery goes pretty fast, that map was a smaller one to test it. i will endeavour to get a nice video of the issue. i am about to refresh the drone and controller and calibrate everything.

You can see the drone goes to around 35kph then it slows down on a big angle to slow it down. Then it slows to much and repeats the process, I drive auto steer tractors and machines all day and it’s like it it’s trying to find the set point kind of like a pendulum but because it accelerates to fast it keeps speeding up then slowing. I’m working on a video now

i made a video, you can see going to way point everything is ok, when it takes photos is when the speed goes  up and down, when i stop the camera it evens out the speed. i made this map with 9sec photos its not as bad as 4 second photos but still does it, you can psycally see the drone in the air speeding up and slowing it gets on a pretty big angle when slowing down.  link to the video,

thanks guys for all your help

i also refreshed the firmware on the controller and mini3pro, reinstalled dronelink. didn't change.    something is going on when photos are taken. i am running a high speed micro sd, also have tested it with the drones onboard memory and still the same issue

The speed is not actually changing that fast just as you can see the distance jump a lot as well. Looks like your device is just lagging a bit when photos are taken. It’s causing the delay in information and it needs to catch up. DL needs a powerful device which will be able to keep up and even with a much more powerful device the telemetry will jump around a bit when processing the photos. If taking in JPEG + RAW which takes more time to process it will usually be worse. Even with a more powerful device and using an good quality V30 rated SD card it can do this when taking photos. To me nothing looks wrong and the only thing I can see happening since the mission looks like it’s flying along smooth otherwise. It only looks like it jumps forward because the live feed freezes up then eventually catches up and so it looks like it bolts forward. This is why the live feed is smooth when not capturing photos. You may try a different device to see if it’s better or worse. To me this looks like normal operation and I’ve flown a lot of missions over almost three years with about 36 hours of flights with DL. The photos should be fine and you should have no problems using to create 2D or 3D imagery if the camera settings are set properly. Enjoy.

Mate the speed is actually changing that fast I can see and hear the drone doing it. The drone gets nearly sideways slowing down

Definitely not normal operation battery only lasts 14min due to the drone speeding up psycally. Cull take a video today of the actual drone speeding up and slowing

Photos are also unusable most of the time, gaps between are too long. Maps come out blurry and missing bits

I wish it was just lag but as stated a few times the actual drone is speeding up and slowing can see it and hear it

Mission definitely not flying smooth, used 2 battery’s to only take 20 min off time left, because the drone speeds up that much it chews the battery big time

I'll definitely give it a go with my mini2 on Monday, according to the mission estimate it should take about 8 minutes, so just under half a battery, and I'll screen record the mission as well

i have finally smoothed it out, it only does it now between the 1st and 2nd photo, rest of the waypoint it takes photos beautifully sitting at the set speed, these 2 things did it, i make it so i need to take photos every 6 seconds and the main setting that fixed it was the execution freq target  i found 20 works best for me, minium freq @ 7 , might have something to do with radio interference, i live on a massive farm and we have a 80 meter communication tower nearby that transmits and receives internet through a network of towers on our farms,it also has wifi and 3 other transmitters and receivers for auto tracking and steering tractors. maybe that might be the cause of it all, thanks guys for your input, happy mapping

Glad to hear you've got sorted Grav Kelso, whereabouts do you find that setting, I don't seem to be able to find it

and also speed if i go above 13kph it starts to do it, that setting is in the main setting menu for the map, engagement parameters

    execution freq target

Had you changed these values from the defaults originally or the behavior was presenting itself with the defaults?

80 meter communication tower nearby that transmits and receives internet through a network of towers on our farms,it also has wifi and 3 other transmitters and receivers for auto tracking and steering tractors

The way to prove this theory (i.e. RF interference), you can just copy the mission to another test location that doesn't have these factors and see if it works fine.
