Which DJI drones support onboard waypoints as of May 2023?

Last drone which supported onboard capability was the Mavic 2 Pro which was released about 5 years ago. So no drone manufactured after that has the ability. All since use Virtual Stick.

This is true for MSDKv4 drones, but the M3E and M30 actually do support onboard but it is a different format, so Dronelink doesn’t support onboard for those drones yet.

That's interesting about the M3E supporting that.  There is a specific shot I use often that requires onboard waypoints.  Is it something you are planning on supporting in the future?

Last time I checked, the number of onboard missions for MSDKv4 drones was something like 1/3 of 1% of all missions in the system. Sadly it seems like one of those features that people claim they really want and then never use, despite it being quite a large amount of effort to implement.

Fair enough.  It is definitely something that is only useful in certain very specific situations and, by the sound of it, probably not worth your time to implement if the use is that low.

Learned something new again. Unfortunately too many pilots like to fly way too far away and when it disconnects it may finish the mission but pilot has no control. I don’t tell anyone how to fly their drones but I think that is an issue and possibly why they discontinued that ability. Always some people who will ruin it for others. Maybe they figure the much more expensive enterprise drones are used mostly by commercial pilots who are more responsible and they figure they won’t abuse it. Just my thoughts. Enjoy…..

While there may be some people that use onboard waypoints to fly out of range, I really don't think that is what most people use it for.  The good thing about onboard waypoints that there is zero lag - it doesn't matter how fast your tablet is or how strong your signal is, that mission will be executed perfectly.  So if you find yourself with the drone wavering on (say) an orbit, or being in an environment with a lot of radio noise causing interference, then converting to onboard waypoints will fix it.

So, for me, I usually don't use it unless I find a problem.  That's because while it works, you lose a lot of the more advanced functionality such as being able to add camera settings, etc.  Then, if things are not working as planned, I convert in the field (always have my laptop with me) and re-run.

Understand about the difference in lag Barry and I know you would not abuse the ability and most would not. I’ve seen some that don’t care and purposely send it whether Litchi or DL on YouTube. Its always the few who abuse it which makes it harder to keep it. Anyway, life moves on.

There is a problem in Virtual Stick on M3E

When the remote transmitter decreases by one signal, it stops or lost

Watch the video of the problem on Facebook
