Which DJI Mavic "best" for photos?

Tim B

Client wants to buy their own Mavic drone for me to work with them and is asking which would be the best for mainly still images and that would work with Dronelink. I haven't kept up with all the models out there so not sure what to recommend yet. Price is not that big a factor.

A lot of opinions out there and it will depend on how you will be using the photos. Most have either 12MP or 20MP. Only a few with 48MP photo capability and the MA2 has been discontinued although you can still find them. The new Mini 3 has 48MP as well and is available in Beta. Need to look at what drones are supported and decide from that list. Most have either 12MP or 20MP and the quality is usually more then needed. Many use both for creating 2D or 3D imagery. That’s my 2 cents worth. Good luck.

Here is a list of supported drones.

Thanks for the input Mike (Arizona Wyldwest)

I currently have the Air 2 but as I expect you know, claims of 48MP are misleading given that the Quad Bayer Array technology they use to arrive at this resolution has its downside as well. Pretty good explanation here of how that works here.

I guess it comes down to sensor size vs. budget when trying to decide. The Mavic 3 series with the Micro Four Thirds sensor checks a lot of boxes. Now I just need to sell concept to the client. :-)

Wonder if anyone here is using that model?

Yes the Mavic 3 would be a great choice but remember, only the Mavic 3T, E & M are supported so a good chunk of money. If I’m not mistaken even those big money drones use a separate 1/2” quad bayer sensor for their 48MP. It’s just they way they all are. So no regular Mavic 3 or Classic is supported. I understand how the Quad Bauer sensor works and have read those same comparisons but 48MP is actually correct even if it isn’t as good as a large sensor. I don’t believe any of these drones have a larger 48MP sensor. It’s a big difference though when I’ve shot in 12 and 48MP. I can zoom in and you can see how much better it is then 12MP. Pilots choice on their needs. Hope it all works out. Enjoy Tim.
