Automatically break large map missions into several smaller component missions

Will Dodge

Based on the discussion in this post and results from the field today, it does appear that creating several smaller missions for large area mapping, rather than a single large misson, is more efficient. It would be nice to recieve a warning when the maps are potentially problematic and a quick option to break the map into component missions that are ordered, managable, and connected on the web interface.

So I see there is a warning when the map is too large, which is great given that am following up on this same issue/feature reported sometime back. So the feature is implemented.

I think we need to up the feature to a new level using computing resources. While current alert is better than nothing, an improvement will be to have DL prompt if the user will like to split the map into components and perhaps group them under the same mission. This can also be an option that can be provided to already saved large maps. I presume there is an internal sort of baseline set.

I got the warning now, and it doesn't make life any easier anyway. I think DL can help manage the componentization of a large map mission by splitting it for me and managing them under the named mission folder structure. Should this be another feature request? Or it's already there....

an improvement will be to have DL prompt if the user will like to split the map into components and perhaps group them under the same mission.

What difference would this make, it would still be one large mission rather than lets say 3 small separate missions, so I'm guessing would still require the same resources as the original large mission

group them under the same mission

Either this, or create a new concept called a "workflow" which can automatically queue up multiple missions. It is on the roadmap already.

I like that... a workflow that can address this could be a great way. So I can create a map without having to worry about that elaborate copy/paste process etc., and the mission can be automagically be managed in chunks by the workflow engine. Glad to know it's on the roadmap.

Drone Harmony will prompt you to suggest splitting the mission into smaller pieces based on waypoints.  You can select 500 waypoints, 100, 200 etc.   I find this much better than having to 'guess' or have big overlaps at the mission boundaries.   I really hope this becomes a reality!
