Video and Screen Recording of Orbit

Mike (Arizona Wyldwest) Dronelink Expert Dronelink Expert

This is one of my longer post but, I like helping others and maybe something in this will assist someone. I am no where near an expert at this but, over the last several months I’ve figured out a lot about how to create amazing missions and get most of them to work well.

If you read any of the other posts about jerky on-screen video feed or not smooth Orbits then you understand what this is about. If not, here is some info. Much of this is repeated but maybe others will see this post and possibly help.

I’m using a Mavic Air 2 with an IPad Mini 5 (5th generation). Running the Dronelink Native App version 2.2.0 which was released about one week ago in the app stores. I know there have been some issues with jerky video feed or the Orbits not running smoothly. Seems like a few issues and different outcomes depending on which device or Drone you are using. I’m sure it’s frustrating to have these issues and I hope you can get therm figured out.

1.  Initially there was some issues with some of the Beta App versions having Jerky video feed. Since the last Beta version 2.2.0 build (142) I haven’t had this issue and since the new Native App release it works great for me. If still having any jerky video feed I believe it’s more then likely the device being used. DL needs a powerful device which should have been released within the last year or two. Some just work better than others depending on what brand or model. Jim indicates this information in the link below.

2.  The recorded video should look smooth and great quality even in 1080. If having an issue with the video running smooth once transferred from your SD card, then it’s possibly the device your using. Most home PC’s can’t play actual 4K true UHD videos. Portable smart devices work much better overall and I can only use my IPad to play and edit them. I have no issues at all playing or editing any of my videos. I don’t believe this has anything to do with the DL app since the recording is being done by the drones camera and stored on the drones SD card. All DL is doing is sending a command to start video recording automatically.

3.  The smooth Orbits will vary depending on many factors. The model of drone being used, the Rotation rate, acceleration and deceleration rate, some possible other settings but especially the drones speed. The faster the speed the harder it is to stay in a smooth Orbit. Also any winds can make the drone move slighter faster or slower depending on if it’s rotating into a cross-wind or against the cross-wind. It will yaw a bit especially in higher winds like a true 15 mph or even higher. The MA2 weighs only about 1.3 pounds and even tho it’s fly’s really great, it still can get pushed a bit in higher winds. I also have a Mavic Mini which only ways about 8 ounces. The orbits are no where close to being as smooth as the MA2 for many reasons but especially the weight. I’ve ran Orbits with the Mini and needed to slow the speed down to about 5 mph or less just to get it semi-smooth. High winds make it very difficult to get it smooth since it gets pushed so easily. My personal weather station was indicating actual winds varying between 10 to 15 mph and some gusts up to 18 mph for reference.

Here are two videos of an Orbit I just did two days ago on Monday. Unfortunately it’s always windy here but at least it will give an idea of some slight yawing with the winds. You can see in the video when it rotates around at one spot the cross-winds hit it from the side and it yaws a bit. Once it continues around it looks fairly smooth again. Overall I believe it’s really good especially with the winds. The other video is an actual screen recording showing the video feed which is smooth. Don’t pay attention to the video quality. YouTube destroys the quality of the uploaded videos and they are nowhere as good as they originals. There just for a reference of how the video feed and Orbits looks. I did narrate on the screen recording some info but you can turn it down if not interested.

The last thing I can suggest to do if any issue with DL App is to delete it first, then shut down your deceive and reboot it so it’s refreshed. Then download the DL Native App. Make sure you don’t have both the DL Native App and still any DL Beta Apps downloaded at the same time. You should only have one DL app. Also before any flight with either the DJI Fly app or the DL app, I always shut down my iPad and reboot so it’s refreshed. Just like any PC it’s a computer which can get bogged down and needs a rebooting. Doing it this way has worked great without any major issues overall.

I apologize for the lengthy post but as I said I enjoy helping others. Maybe something will help.

Good luck and Enjoy.

Thank you Mike, for this post. I found it quite helpful. Keep uploading valuable information like this, it's what sets DL apart, and makes it a great experience. Much appreciated!

👍🏼  As I stated, I enjoy helping others and we all started out knowing nothing. Everything in life we learn, even how to crawl then walk. Lol.

    Good day, Mike..............
