Just Starting with dronelink

Terry Snow

There is a lot I like about drone link, The way missions are programmed, The ability of the software to control all of the drones features,  Its modularity....

I've done 49 short missions since I downloaded drone link this week with about 50% success rate.  I have been able figure out how to make it do just what I want it to do but one thing remains unsatisfactory about it and I have some questions and thoughts on it.

I just can't get it to hit a destination or the approach part of a motion component  cleanly. Once it finally achieves the approach co-ordinates the rest of the component flies reasonably well, but it tries 3 - 5 times before it hits the mark  and with faster settings it sometimes misses by a larger margin each time and it only stops when I terminate the mission with the sport mode switch.

Q1.  Is the Mavic Pro Platinum just to old a drone to work with this system?

Q2.  Is there a minimum vertical and/or horizontal space required between the end of one motion command and the approach of the next  motion command for the drone to make a smooth transition between commands?

Q3. Do the performance settings in the drone make a difference. ie brake gain or brake sensitivity.

My thought is that the 200ms latency between drone telemetry being sent to the flight controller, flight controller calculating the response  and the drone implementing the commanded response is at the root of this problem.

Question 1: The Mavic Pro Platinum is on their approved list so I don’t think that’s the issue.

The other two questions I’ll leave for a Jim or someone else to help with.

Also what device are you using and can you share your plan ?

Jim is on here usually everyday and I’m sure he can help you.

make a smooth transition between commands

Assuming you mean between components, the answer is you don't have much control. If you want one, smooth, continuous motion, you should just be using a single Path component with markers.

Arizona Wyldwest, thank you for your reply. I am using a Galaxy A20e phone the specs for this phone are

    Processor  Lassen-P+
    Dual 1.6 GHz + Hexa 1.35 GHz

Memory  RAM 3 GB,  ROM 32 GB

Here are 2 of my mission plans.  both do the same thing.

Jim McAndrew, thank you for your reply. Yes that is what I meant to say.

HI Terry. I ran that simple mission and they look normal to me. I may be wrong but I believe it’s Impossible to get a smooth continuous video between any start or stop functions. No different then you flying the drone manually and pause to start video, adjust heading etc.

I look at my approach as it just getting to the area to start the mission. It can be used in many other ways of course but there will always be a pause and movement to adjust its heading once it arrives at the destination especially when it’s not a straight approach like in your plan. Then the pause will depend on your achievement time setting which is default at 4 seconds to initiate any component commands. You can change the achievement time but it will still pause slightly and then adjust the drones heading depending on how you set it up. Try setting Achievement time lower to see how it works but, it will still pause to adjust the heading and initiate any commands.

If I want to record video which will have very little or no drone heading change, gimbal movement etc, then initiate the commands after the approach once it starts on the path with all command as Jim Stated.

If I want to start video at the very start of the mission right from ground takeoff and make it look better without seeing any rotation to the path, I setup my approach so it’s lined up to the path as best as possible. There will still be a pause but at least it won’t rotate dramatically.

Also you can just leave the Takeoff Restriction to “None” which is default. You don’t need “Specific Area.”  Maybe you were just trying I it to see how it worked but not necessary.

Good luck Terry and enjoy Mike.....
