Photo Missions

Mark Dean

I like the way you can use the 3D Planner to position the drone, gimbal pitch/heading etc, to frame the photo before clicking on the + button and creating a photo with those framing attributes.

What I am trying to work out, is how to alter an existing photo component using that same 3D Planner window? I was expecting to click on the photo component (or right-click) and a contextual menu pop up, offering the option to view in the 3D planner (for framing purposes etc.)

I am maybe missing something obvious here on how to achieve this?

The user guide says to go to the Mission Preview and scroll to the photo - but I'm not sure what is meant by this specifically?

Thanks

Run the mission preview with the window minimized. At bottom is all the drones camera, battery, telemetry etc. You can scroll the preview bar in the timeline to where the Photo is being taken which is Red. Once you see how it looks just click on the photo component and change the pitch, heading, photo type or altitude.

Here is a screenshot. It indicates the drones heading and the gimbal pitch in the preview window and will be the same when you click on the component. A few degrees on heading either way and the gimbal pitch adjusted up or down and your done. Hope this helps. Good Luck Mark....

    Thanks, Mike

So,  can you alter the position of the drone in the preview window and then have it record the new gimbal position/heading etc. to the photo component itself, or it a case of using the preview as a guide and then altering the settings in the component drop down box (once the preview window is closed - if this makes any sense?

This would then mean that you are having to compose the shot from inputting numerical data, rather than being able to frame it visually?

Maybe a new feature request would be the way to go?

Preview as a guide. If setting it up using the 3D mission planer it should be as you set it up though. That’s the entire reason to use it that way. It’s just as fast to adjust the settings on the component and run the mission preview. It should only be a few degrees or so. I just set up a mock plan using 3D planner and changed the pitch and degrees in about 30 seconds so It really takes no more time. Enjoy…

I normally set up my photos  using a POI, you can then change the gimbal angle by tweaking the vertical offset of the POI, I've never got on with the 3D planner, even after watching Barry Houldsworth very good video on the subject

I'm not aware of any way to make adjustments using the 3D planner.  You can use the 3D planner, take note of the values shown on the screen and use those to manually enter numbers into the existing photo elements.

Given the chances of getting that wrong - e.g. you think it looks good but didn't realize that you moved the marker - it's not the way I would do it.

Perhaps a better (but not perfect) solution would be:

    • Use the 3D planner to add new photos - exactly as you did before
    • Delete the ones that are you want to update (you are now replacing them)
    • Use the Up/Down arrows to move the photo to the correct spot in the mission (to avoid it flying back and forth unnecessarily)

    Hope that helps!

Thanks guys for all your help!

For any new photo missions I will use the virtual drone and create photos from the 3D preview screen - it was just converting existing missions that I was looking at (and a quicker way of updating them).

I think the deleting existing photo components and effectively recreating them, then repositioning them in the plan is the best solution for my purposes.

Thanks again all - your support is much appreciated!
