Battery Swap timings in Mission Preview

Mark Dean

I just noticed something that could be a really handy feature within the Mission Preview window (telemetry graphs at the bottom of the window) - in the battery section, there is an ellipsis ... that you can click on to manually set the battery change points. So for example, a 20 minute Map Mission shows as default: Battery 1, 15mins and Battery 2, 5 minutes.

Am I understanding this correctly (or being obtuse and so missing the obvious); can you change the settings here and this will then instruct the drone to return home automatically at those points for a battery swap?

Those are just estimates and have no actual effect on the mission, they are just there to help you tweak missions, so you can the drone close so that you don't waste too much battery flying home and then back out on the battery swap

You use that to set how long you think you can fly on a single battery.  By default I think it is set to a conservative 15 minutes.  I usually fly 20 minutes (or more) so I changed mine to 20 to give a better indication of how many batteries a mission will take.

This is probably even more important now that some of the drones, like the M3E, can have a much longer flight time.

I see - so it's more of a guide during the planning stage, rather than a definitive point in the actual mission where an auto RTH is triggered?

Thanks Martin and Barry as always for your help

yes, auto return to home is not triggered by this, you can set your own low battery and serious  low battery warning levels by using the appropriate commands

That's very helpful to be able to add those commands, as I prefer to RTH with 'plenty' of battery power and would never dare risk as low as 15%!

There is just so much functionality in Dronelink!

Some thoughts on the low battery warnings. Not sure if anyone has tried them but I’ve tried the low battery warnings several times even recently and the mission always fails due to that command at start of mission. I believe they don’t work on any drone which uses the DJI Fly app which does not have any low battery warnings in the software therefore it cannot be loaded into the firmware on drone. I am curious if anyone using a drone with the DJI Fly app has used them and they worked. Maybe Barry has used them with his M2P and others which use the older DJI Apps which allow that function. No success for me with my MA2 which use DJI Fly. Very curious though. ❓

Sorry to say that I don't use that feature - I normally set it in the DJI app when I first get a drone and then leave it.

Must admit I've not used them myself, I just knew they were there, I tend to have mine set at the default app settings and keep an eye on the battery meter where the drone is in the mission, and hit the RTH button at an appropriate point to bring it home for a battery swap

I’ve tried at like 30, 35 and 40% just to see if it worked and it fails. So I’m guessing the 20% which is the default setting in the DJI Fly app for first low battery can’t be changed above it. Only DL knows why since their the real experts. 🥸
