Camera feed, IOS

Mike (Arizona Wyldwest) Dronelink Expert Dronelink Expert

Hey Jim. I’ve read the thread on the issue with some Android devices.

https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/11196339970323-Camera-black-on-Pixel-7-Pro

Beta 4.3.0 (231)

Over the last couple weeks or so I’ve had the same issue using my iPad Mini 5 but only on rare occasions. Many missions ran and worked great then the feed goes black after moving to another location and starting everything up again. I haven’t had this happen using the same iPad with my MA2 since the Beta release for the MA2 in 2020.

As always I’ve been able to get it working by leaving DL app running, open DJI Fly and once camera feed is up within a second or so I switch back to DL and it works. Then I close the DJI app and it is fine. I’m guessing about three times over about 20 missions or so. Is this issue with IOS as well ? Since I know how to get it working it isn’t a big issue for me but maybe something to look into. If it is a DJI bug then I’ll wait patiently. Thanks.

    DL 4.8.2  iOS 16.6.1  iPhone12 DJI MiniSE

I have the same problem.  The video feed is very laggy, or non-existent.  I do get some stills when flying panorama or mapping missions, but not every still photo previews or is in sync.  Otherwise everything works fine and the missions fly without a hitch.  All media is captured as it should be, but I'm flying almost blind.

This does NOT occur in DJIFly, Maven or Litchi.  Only in Dronelink.  What are Maven and Litchi doing with the SDK that DL is not?

I've been using DL since March 2023 and love it, I use it mostly for mapping, but also enjoy the 360 pano function.  I'm happy the Dronelink actually works with my tiny cheap MiniSE, but sure wish the live video feed was usable.

Did it work previously and then stop working at some point? If so, can you please go back and install older versions through TestFlight and post which version it stopped working in?

michael mardis. I tested a small map with Beta 4.8.2 (277). Live feed was fine until I started recording video and then the live feed started staggering most of the time as you stated. If I stopped recording it was smooth. So I tried with previous Beta version 4.8.2 (276) and it was smooth during the entire mapping plan. I updated back to 4.8.2 (277) and tried again and this time the live feed was smooth the entire time. So it could be due to me installing the previous build then back to the current Beta build. I’d suggest to delete the app and reinstall it then run a small map to test while recording video and see if it fixes the issue. If not please advise if using the production version or the Beta with which build.

OK, thanks Mike.  I'll will try some older versions just as you did and report back.  The rain finally lifted here so I can do some flying.
In my past flights there was no video at all, just stills that mostly arrived in real time.

Note: My phone is now on iOS 17, so we shall see.

I did some testing this morning.  iPhone 12, iOS 17.1.1  DJI Mini SE (latest firmware)

With DJI Fly the live video is perfect - no hesitation,no stalling.  Live video functions perfectly with the drone on the ground or in the air.  Live video functions perfectly in video record mode or no record, in photo mode or not in photo mode.  No problems.

Maven V3.13.2  Live video same as DJI Fly, no lockup or freeze in any mode.

Dronelink 4.8.2 (277)  No live  video when the app is opened or when a simple mission flown.  If mission includes video capture, then there is live video for approximately 10 seconds from record start, then it freezes. Sometimes it will unfreeze, then freeze again.  Pano mission.  No live video until still images are taken.  Then there is live video some of the time, but it often freezes and unfreezes.  Opposite of what Mike found, it seems that starting or stopping video record unfreezes the live video.  Unfreeze is also started by taking a still image.  Maximum time of live video stream is ~10 seconds before it freezes again.  So, "doing something" with the camera unfreezes the video, but it doesn't last long.

Dronelink 4.8.2 (276)  Same as above. Maybe slightly more time before freezes, but I'm not sure about that.  Basically the same behavior as build (277)

I started using Dronelink at version 4.4.1  In that version live video would freeze, but not as often as now.  Still, it was barely usable in that version.
No other flying app has the live video freeze problem that DL has.  How old a version should I try?

All other functions of DL seem to work as they should, the only problem is the live video. Lack of live video isn't a big deal during mapping or similar planned missions, as DL flies fine and takes care of business.  But trying to set waypoints or pano points on the fly via a camera view is not possible.

Hi Michael. Are you sure the DJI Fly app is not still open and running in the background. If so It needs to be force closed as well as any other app. The only app running should be the DL Native app. Swipe up on the iPhone screen and check to see if any other apps are still open and if so close them all then power off the phone and restart it. DL is a resource intense app which means it needs all the processing power to use it compared to the other apps. I believe either DJI Fly is still running which will cause live feed issues and/or there are other apps still running in Background. Please Check and advise. I’ll try testing again when the high winds here subside but until then check your Phone.

I have been very careful to close the DJI app, but will double check and report back.

It’s windy here too. Be careful!

Understood. Even my iPhone 8 Plus which is over 6 years old with the A11 chip works even though it is on DL’s low performance list. In technology terms it’s an accent device but the live feed and small plans work without issue. I don’t use it except to test other pilots plans when they are having issues using a device which is old but not as old as the iPhone 8 Plus and in every case it worked. I have some other ideas but I’ll wait to hear your results.

I tested further and reported here, but today I don't see my latest test report. :(

    OK, to be brief:

All same conditions as before.  iPhone rebooted, no apps open.

    • Start DL and connect. NO live video.
    • Fly drone or short mission: NO live video.
    • Start video  record with controller button.  YES live video for 20 secs.  Then video feed freezes
    • Stop video record with controller button. Video UNfreezes for 12 secs, then freezes again.
    • Above can be repeated over and over.  Button push = video unfreeze for 20 seconds. Live video never runs longer than 20 secs before a freeze.
    • Pressing the Photo button on the controller unfreezes video for 20 secs. Same behavior as video record button.

DJIFly, Maven and Litchi do not experience any video freeze on the exact same hardware.  They do lose video signal if out of range, but NOT a video freeze (still frame).

Sounds like DL will need to assist further. I am also using the newest IOS version 17.1.1 on my iPad so I don’t think that is the issue but you never know. I just used my iPhone 8 Plus yesterday to test the follow mode for another pilot and it worked without issue. As Jim mentioned if you can go back one version at a time to see if at any point one of them works that may help to figure out why. You should be able to just connect the drone without actually flying to test the live feed. Very strange.

Strange.  My posts are getting lost.   I did some more testing and got video to work on Android.

I will file a bug report for the iOS version and iPhone 12
