Unable to load plan: Kernel unavailable

Cronix

This problem is identical to https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/9342867917587-Kernel-Missing

Most of my missions are outside of cell/internet range. I always use the "download map for offline use" feature, which has worked fine previously. The last time I went to fly this mission the other day, the app loaded fine but I got the "Unable to load plan: Kernel unavailable" message when trying to load the map. I didn't run into this issue on the previous version of the software. Jim made a comment in the linked thread "The app tries to automatically download the kernel when it launches." I'm wondering what the point of being able to download maps for "offline use" is when it still requires an internet connection elsewhere in the flow. I wasted 3.5 hours of driving.

What do we need to do in order to fly in remote areas now in v4? Why is it necessary to do a *remote* kernel check upon app launch? Can't it just use whatever was last loaded, or only include the kernel in the app bundle from the app store so when you upgrade you officially have everything you need?

The app caches the kernel file and will use it if there is no network connection. If the app automatically updates in the background and the new version requires a new kernel (due to backwards incompatibility), you need to open up the new version at least once with network connectivity before you go offline.

If the app automatically updates in the background, couldn't it also download whatever kernel is needed to make sure the app is completely up to date and usable? It would be nice if we could just rely on the traditional App/Play store update functionality and not have extra manual steps to remember just for this particular app.

When the app updates you normally get a message that an updated kernel is available and all you need to do is hit the refresh button

This only happens in the web app. In the mobile app all you have to do is open the app with network available and it automatically updates. Presumably you should do this anyway before you go offline in order to download the latest versions of your mission plans.

Yes, but a lot of the time I'm just reflying the same previously downloaded mission and not downloading it every time I leave the house because things rarely change with it. It's a repeatable mission that I'm monitoring progress on a building site with and repeat it every few weeks or when a milestone is hit. There are also a lot of times I don't plan to fly, but do. I leave the drone in the car. From what you're saying, it sounds like I will need to open the app every time I leave the house, just in case. This is up in the mountains. Occasionally I'll be driving with no plans of flying, but then come around a corner and the fog is just right, the sun and trees are just right, the lake is just right, etc, and I have my equipment. Or maybe the weather was bad when I intended on recording, and want to record when it clears up and I happen to be there.

Will this issue get resolved if I disable autoupdates only for DroneLink and just update it manually?

Yes. We may update the app to have a version of the kernel included in the bundle in the future.
