Five Minute Friday - Browser Wars!
The research for today's Five Minute Friday literally changed how I plan all of my missions.
Which browser is the fastest? You might be surprised.

Nothing surprising there, personally I won't have chrome on any of my machines, and it's grey ride of its little brother edge if I could, personally I use Waterfox, which of course is based on Firefox
Chrome is probably too busy sending your data to google, so it slows down. Firefox has always been better and faster than Chrome, except when Chrome very first came out it had some better integrated tools for web developers, but that time has long since passed.
I already posted on Facebook so not going to duplicate it here. Been using Firefox for about 15 years and has always worked great. I looked at WaterFox but didn’t like I had to create an account and log in to use it. I rarely log in to Firefox except to sync my bookmarks on occasion between iPad and PC and then log out. Maybe once a year. I also disable anything which sends data, shares info, like studies etc….Google sucks your live out, one way or another. No way to get around all of the intrusive stuff but I try to let them take as little as possible. I’ll stick with Firefox on PC and iPad.
I switched a long time ago to Chrome because, back then, it was MUCH faster than just about anything else out there at the time. That was probably a long time ago and I've been too lazy to switch but...I'll probably just move everything over soon. I have noticed that Chrome is a huge memory hog too.
And yes, Google has far too much of my data!
Good info Barry. Always appreciate the time you spend making these FMF’s. 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Mike - glad you like them :)
Yeah, keep up the good work Barry👍
Very informative video and a great way to visually present the differences between browsers. And, like all of BH's videos, succinct and to the point.
Question: I more than a little surprised to see such a wide difference between the different platforms. I actually had thought that DL processing speed was more due to the machine you're running on than the browser. Wondering if a mission such as this was run on multiple computers of varying processing power, how much difference the hardware would make?

I ran on two machines (as you can see). My PC is old but I have upgraded a few things over the years, such as the GPU.
What I can tell you is that for anything that relies on the CPU only, my little Mac outperforms my PC. For anything that relies heavily on the GPU, my PC usually wins out.
So, a faster machine will definitely run faster but, as you can see, the browser makes a huge difference. So the best bet is a fast machine AND Firefox.
I know a lot of people do use tablets and phones for this too, but the number of combinations to test would have been huge and, I think, most people don't change the browsers on their mobile devices anyway, so I opted not to go there.
I am a little late to the party here. I did not realize that there would be such a huge difference between browsers. This is great information as usual!!!

Thanks for the comment.
That's a big part of why I put this together. I stumbled upon this by accident. I often setup and plan, run it in 3D, and then iteratively tweak until I get it where I want it. Being able to do this literally 10x faster in Firefox was a game changer.
When Dronelink has a user group meeting I hope to be able to buy you a round of your choice. Really appreciate your sharing of solid information!!
Thanks Tony Simek
I think we need to get Jim to fund a user group meeting with drinks :)
