Importance of Mobile phone device

David Miller
Today I tested my drone configuration (phone, dronelink app & drone) on a mission test. I have been having major problems with 'device running slowly' since purchasing the app. I thought it could be because I am surrounded by authorised air space. Today's test was in a clear area to eliminate this variable. I did a map mission with an iPhone 8 (ios12) iPhone 12 (ios12), MA2 drone, dronelink (3.4.1). The conclusion was the iPhone 8 was the problem. There are significant differences in RAM & processor speeds across the different phone devices, which I didn't initially consider & that makes all the difference. My advice is if you go mapping, go with the iPhone 12 which has 4 GB ram & a powerful processor, otherwise you will have issues.

This is discussed here. We probably need to include the iPhone 8 in the list of legacy devices now too.

I have rarely used my iPhone 8 Plus which is just a larger screen. I’ve had no issues even recently. I believe your biggest issue is the IOS software. You stated your using “IOS 12” and the current version is 15.6 so IOS 12 is really, really old. According to Apple IOS 12 was initially released iin 2018 so not sure why you haven’t updated both. Update the IOS software version to the current version and I believe a lot of your issues may be solved. Can’t hurt to try especially since my iPhone 8 still works.

Ok David, Lol…. At least it’s a much newer version. It’s been awhile since I used my iPhone 8 but it has always worked without issues. Jim is far smarter than me and he knows his software and I’m sure how the processors work. I know there is a little difference in the actual A11 vs A12 chip which is in my iPad Mini 5? I’m curious if something has changed recently which may cause mine to struggle now. I’m going to test it with a few plans just to see. Glad to hear the iPhone 12 so working great. 🤙🏼

Further to the above & this topic, a few questions arise in order to have a better understanding of the app :

Has the app developed from the initial release till now, so that the iPhone 8 can no longer run the app reliably?

Is the Map component the most resource intensive module of the Dronelink suite?

What is the recommended RAM, processor speed & memory configuration for a mobile device to successfully run the Map component ?

We are continually adding new features and many times these features require more processing power because they provide more advanced functionality than the Dronelink of 2 or 3 years ago. Dronelink is more focused on cutting edge innovation and less on optimizing the user experience on devices and processors that are 5+ years old. We don’t intentionally try to make the app a resource hog, and we are constantly trying to get the best performance we can from the code, but we also aren’t going to let performance considerations (particularly on old device) limit our development goals and the features that we can deliver on modern devices. Having said that, there are probably scenarios that will run just fine on an iPhone 8, but large maps with terrain follow, etc is not one of them.

What is the recommended RAM, processor speed & memory configuration

The recommendation is, use a device that has a processor that was released within the last 2 years.

David. That iPhone 12 has an A14 which is even better then the iPad Mini 5 which works great. I really like the size of an IPad Mini though. It’s not too big or heavy and a good size screen which makes a big difference compared a common standard 5.5” phone screens or similar. I Only use my iPhone on a rare occasion to fly missions but mostly for Follow Mode which needs a device with GPS. I’d suggest If you are able to invest in the future get a larger screen device. Also when out in the field it is so much easier to create, edit, view a plan with a 8” screen or larger. DL did make it much better with the small phone screen with the new 2.0 version but still so much easier with a larger one. Just some thoughts and ideas. Glad to hear  it’s working for you. Enjoy Sir……
