Mapping Altitude

Matthew Jameson

I am getting ready to do a mapping mission using Dronelink for the second time.  The first was for a test flight, this one will be for real purpose.  I will be doing area maps for a missing person (likely human remains). When planning a mapping mission, I see that the standard mapping altitude is 285 feet for the DJI Mini 2 component.  It also appears the speed defaults at 20 mph max.

I am curious, is 285 feet the recommended height?  Is that static or dynamic based on the map area being covered?  Also, it doesn't appear there is a capture speed (looks like it may also be set by the max speed field, in this case 20).

I cant seem to find out online the best altitude to map.  In my mind, closer would be better for detail, but research online seems to contradict that thinking for the sake of total coverage and overlap, it seems higher may be better?

If you need more detail - go lower and go slower.  Just remember that the lower and slower you go, the more time it will take.  You can use the simulator to provide an estimate of the time it will take.

Looking at this more, it looks like you can set a specific max speed for the mission itself which then correlates with that same specific speed ad the capture speed.  I wonder if it may be beneficial for me to go to the starter business plan instead when I could set a max speed and then a designated capture speed......just bought Elite. shoot!

But then, i wonder how that effects battery life with the drone having to speed up and slow down.  Doesn't seem it would be as efficient.  Possibly quicker mission at the trade off of battery inefficiency.

If you set up a mission you can click either of these buttons to get either a time estimate or a preview of the mission

Both will tell you how long it will take and you can play around with it to see how things are affected.
