Altitude above ground level

When setting reference for altitude AGL the altitude in the preview doesn't show it. It stays at the set level no matter what the ground level is during flight. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Goal is to see alt changes during preview. Thanks.

Can you share a link to the plan?

Thanks Barry, but you can  disregard question. I found Mike's article and found out my mistake. Expecting program to automatically track gl. Now know that AGL markers must be placed manually. Is auto tracking on the stack?

Hi. Norman. Do you mean something like DJI’s Active Track ?

Hi Mike, no. I want the drone to auto adjust it's altitude above ground level as it flies based on the changes in ground level using the altitude set in the mission. The term Terrain follow fits even though it's not available in DL.

Terrain follow is available but only in business plans. If you have an older Hobbyist premium or The elite plan it has AGL ability with markers. I’ve flown many missions without issues. It’s doesn’t work exactly the same as Terrain  follow but works well. You need to set to Ground level and add AGL markers along the path to work well but does a great job. I just flew a plan today using AGL at 45’. The mission preview will show what it will look like. If you run it on Google Earth it will look much better and I always run them before any actual mission. I have several plans if you want to see them to give you an idea of how to set it up. Please let me know.

Also the ESRI data used is only accurate for about every 30 meters (about 100) feet along the path. This is why you need to place markers along the path every so often and especially at locations where the elevation changes a good amount, especially if altitude increases. Takes time to test but does work.

Hi Mike, sounds like it's just what I want. Yes that would be great if you could share a typical mission so I could see how it's done. Thanks

Here are two plans which I have actually flown. The 45’ AGL was flown recently. The Fish Canyon plan I ran last year which is in the State Forest area. Followed the drone on my Motorcycle to see how it did which had no issues. 600’ elevation change from original take-off location, maintained approx 65’ + or - altitude over about 3.5 miles. Hope these help. Enjoy…

Let me know if you need any additional assistance or have questions. I obviously don’t have all the answers and there may be others which can help. Using AGL with markers has been working great for me though. Enjoy..

I noticed that the alt parameter in the preview seems to only reference the atl and not the agl, is this true?

That is correct. It doesn’t continously report AGL because it only knows the actual AGL altitude at the point of the markers.

DJI doesn't active terrain track either, at least not that I can determine.  Which I noticed when take off from a cliff (ground zero) then as the mini 2 clears the cliff (only 30 feet high) and I drop the drone down it shows -negative feet.

That altitude shown is always relative to your take-off point.

Thanks all. I tried the agl marker approach and it works fine.
