GPS Errors/Not Able to take controls

Mike Liggett

Hi I attempted to fly a approved mission (both from airmap and dji fly safe) in a controlled zone today and kept getting the gps error message and on other time a warning dronelink could not take the controls.  This was a terrain follow grid mapping mission and it appeared as soon as the drone started to drop in elevation to follow the terrain, it would abruptly stop and give me this error.  Any thoughts?  Looked at other support questions, but seems like a slightly different scenario.

Thanks

There are a number of things that could be a factor here.

Taking control - if the mission is still running you won't be able to do anything.  The easiest solution here is to use the mode switch to toggle between flight modes - e.g. switching to sport mode and back.  This allows you to take manual control.

As for the approval in Fly Safe.   Depending on the type of approval, there are different methods of making use of it.  In some cases you need to load it into the drone through the DJI app - are you sure that it was applied correctly?   You should have received an email from DJI that included instructions on how to use it.  Note that often you will have to go through that procedure again if you swap batteries.

I have often found that when there are problems if you switch to the DJI app and try to manually fly in the direction it was heading, you will receive an error that is more descriptive.  It is also true that DJI and the FAA often don't agree - I recently ran a job where I had LAANC approval to fly to 400ft but DJI wouldn't let me go above 200ft, which was quite annoying.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks Barry-

Understood there could be some DJI/FAA nuances to this.  I am pretty sure I synced the fly safe info with the drone correctly and the app accepted and let me take off.  Dronelink also recognized this and let me start the mission and fly a small portion of it, then as soon as the drone started to drop in elevation with the AGL feature, it abruptly stoped and gave me the gps error.  I then switched to the DJI app and flew it back.  Does this sound like something different or still could be related to your thoughts shared above?

The DJI lockouts are not great, and there can be multiple overlapping ones that cause headaches.

One thing I have found is that they seem to have a bit of a buffer - e.g. if you draw a line when requesting the airspace lockout to be removed, it will often complain if you go near that, instead of letting you fly right up to it.

Do you have an Airdata account?  I would recommend uploading the flight logs to that and seeing what errors that report.  Also, in the future, before you fly back using the DJI app - try to fly in the same direction and see if it lets you do that.
