Changing Drone Model on a Previous Mission

Hank Hagquist

Looking at getting a copy of Dronelink to practice with while I wait for the SDK to be released for the DJI Mini 2. What I am wondering is if I create missions using, say the DJI Mini, as the craft, I can easily use these missions for the Mini2 when it is available? Thank you.

Yes. You can create, save and use any mission plan with any drone which Dronelink supports. Only issue may be some of the commands or functions may not work with a particular drone. Specific settings for camera, obstacle avoidance and others will only work on a drone which supports those features/ functions. Example: MM can’t shoot 4K video so you would need to change anything in an existing plan to reflect what your drones capability is.

I use the same plans with my MM and MA2. Since the MA2 has many more capabilities I just need to change or adjust anything in the plan if needed before flying either of them. Also, once a plan is created you can easily make a copy of that plan and change anything if needed.

    Enjoy.

If you want to use the same mission with different drones you can do it with the next trick: every command has a "Required" attribute which define what DL need to do if the drone can not execute the actual command. If you set up your camera with resolution HD and FPS = 30 for example and you set the "Required" to Yes in that case mini 1 and mini2 will execute this command and will abort the mission only if your drone has some big problem. After this command you can insert another command in your mission which will setup the resolution for example 4K and FPS = 30 (what the mini 2 can not execute) and you will setup in this command the "Required" to no. What will happened? The mini1 will execute the first command without error and will not execute the second command and will not abort the mission because the "Required" was set to "No". It means your mini1 will work wid HD resolution. If you will run the same mission with mini2 it will execute both command without error and your mini 2 will make the video with 4K resolution.

    Gabor.

Be careful with that approach.  It works in some instances but can cause problems in others. I ran some experiments to test things out quite a while ago and ended up aborting using this as a method because, while it sometimes works, there are other times when executing a command that is not valid for that drone causes it to reset completely without an error.

For example, if you set the following:

    Codec: H.264

    Color:  D-log

    Codec: H.265

The first two would work with a P4P but the last would not and that might cause the camera to reset the color profile to None.  I can't remember if that was the exact scenario, but it was something like that, so all I would ask is that you test it before you try it for real.

Note that you can create missions with just camera components that you can run while it is on the ground, so it is easy to test it out without having to fly.

    I hope that helps!

Great info and advice about the camera commands. I’d suggest to remove the props just to make sure you didn’t forget something and it starts to fly when inside the house. The drones with quick release props obviously makes this much easier. I’ve ran every camera command just to see which ones worked with my MA2 so I knew for future missions.

    Enjoy…
