Short M2P range using Dronelink

John Farquhar

When being controlled via Dronelink my Mavic 2 Pro seems to run out of range at a few hundred metres.  Using the DJI Go 4 App it will happily fly for >5km, still with a solid connection.  Since the hardware is common to both flights, the short operating range with Dronelink is presumably a feature of the app itself?  If so, and if this feature is an unavoidable consequence of the architecture of the app, then I will give up trying to make it work and revert to DJI Go 4.  This would be a real pity because, in my humble view, everything else about Dronelink is excellent.

Can anyone advise, please?

Simply running Dronelink instead of DJI Go 4 has no effect on the signal range of the hardware. Having said that, Dronelink does require a constant, solid connection in order to operate effectively. If you are flying in and out of signal, or in low signal ranges, Dronelink will not work.

    Thanks Jim, that is helpful.

It sounds as though Dronelink is less tolerant of intermittent signal dropouts than the DJI app.  That being the case, I could still use Dronelink for shorter range missions, which would be 80% of my flights.  At the moment I don't yet have a good feel for how far I can take the drone with Dronelink... but I guess that will come with experience.

One last question, please.  At the moment I'm setting up Dronelink to command the drone to automatically RTH on signal loss.  But I sometimes take off from rough ground with nearby hazards such as trees, and I constantly worry that the drone will not land accurately or will encounter a tree as it descends.  What would be the best way for me to interrupt the RTH process and take manual control for the final part of the landing?

It is the same as if you are in DJI GO, you just flip the flight mode switch or press the RTH button again.
