Compass Different between DJI Fly and Dronelink
Trying to understand why the compass is off in Dronelink. I am using an iPad Mini 5 (non cellular, so no GPS) tablet.
I calibrated the compass and IMU before starting this test.
When I opened DJI fly, the compass read within 5 or 6 feet. Switching to Dronelink after disconnecting DJI Fly, my compass reading showed 53'.
I had not really paid any attention to this because all my flights have been flawless.
When I went back thru several screen captures of previous flights and noticed all of them are around 100 or so feet from where the actual controller in Dronelink. Previous flights that I have captured screens from show variances exceeding 115' in some cases, yet the missions performed perfectly.
So I did this test in my driveway today to be sure. I repeated the test with my iPhone and got similar results.

I believe all location information is derived from the Drone's GPS. A compass provides "bearing" or directional information not a location.
But why the difference in readings between DJI and Dronelink. Same location, same drone, same device.
Is the compass used for any part of navigation in a dronelink mission? ie: would it be used if the there was a failure of any kind?
If you mean the distance, it is showing the distance from the drone to your device. In this case, your device does not have GPS so the location fix is approximate from wifi signals, etc. I believe the DJI distance is showing the distance from the drone to the home location, which is from a much more accurate sensor (the drone's GPS when it first got a lock).
Thank you Jim. Should I be concerned about using the device without GPS? I have a cellular version on order, but would like to understand what consequences not having GPS on the device might pose as I have a friend in the same situation.
It only matters if you are using follow mode.
