Gimbal and camera commands not working for Mavic mini

I created a simple plan with a path and tried to point the gimbal toward the ground and take a picture. The control of the movement of the mavic mini all work as expected but the automation of the gimbal, photo and video features don't seem to work at all.

We had some snow so I had to wait another day.

Here are my results with the brand new drone and using my Samsung Galaxy s10+ with the latest updates. These were the first flights ever for this replacement drone after I was able to return the previous newly purchased drone. Both were identical DJI mavic minis.

1)The Gimbal orientation commands failed to work at all. It seems to have a default gimbal orientation that locks in when destination is used.

    2) Whenever destination was used the gimbal would always reset to 'default' after I pointed it down manually with the controller. This is really annoying.

    3) When path was used at least the gimbal can be orientated manually and will stay at the manual orientation setting. This is acceptable.

    4) The start capture didn't work for either video or photos.

    5) The automatic capture seems to sort of work but the camera setting commands don't seem to hold. For example it captured photos every 10 seconds instead of the single photo setting I used as the immediate goal.

    6) The navigation commands and controls work very well in terms of getting the drone to the right location and altitude and controlling the heading and flight path. The works very well.

In the end, I am able to capture what I want if I use the path method and control the gimbal manually. As a work around I start a video manually when I reach the location and altitude and heading then I subsequently do a screen grab from the video to get the photos that I am looking for.

Can you share your mission plan so we can compare results?

I flew the plan Tommy provided (shared). I copied it and moved it to my location and flew it. I also added several more gimbal orientation commands, none worked. I also already provided (shared) a plan previously which you said worked for you.

Yes I remember. Can I try your modified one to see if it provides any clues?

Ok. Here is the link to the plan Tommy shared and I copied. He also mentioned photos didn't work for him but said the video did work on his I think iPhone 11. Any of the missions in my folder have the same basic result as I described... at least when using my Samsung Galaxy S10+ from Verizon.

I changed the location and added some additional gimbal orientation commands to try and get the gimbal to point down. It never did. When I pointed it down manually it would immediately reset to near zero...looks like some sort of default. The automatic capture seems to also use or result in some sort of default settings other than what I defined as initial immediate goal/setting.

Is there some way to enable debug or additional logging? ..

It looks like the commands happen. There are no error messages and yet some of the expected actions don't happen but I can't think of a good reason why.

"He also mentioned photos didn't work for him but said the video did work on his I think iPhone 11. "

NOT true.  Both worked when when settings were set in previous DEST.   Plan on DEST2 gimbal down, camera capture.  This MUST be instructed at DEST1

I will look at your plan, linked above?, in the A.M.

So, I copied the plan you linked on Sunday around 16:00. to fly on my property

I flew both in mission preview and live with Mavic Mini and iPhone 11 Pro Max.   The mission went as planned in preview and live.

    Goto DEST1 and perform initialization.
Goto DEST 2, start camera capture, turn gimbal -90
Continue to DEST 3  camera continues to capture with gimbal -90.  pausing flight over DEST3.
Goto DEST 4 continuing with camera capturing and gimbal -90.
Stop capture, Goto DEST5. Completed.  I have one video from DEST2 thru DEST4, with gimbal -90.

In Dest1 initialization,  the mission threw an error for invalid Camera Video Resolution and Frame rate 2704v1502 24fps.
I delete this, let it default and everything ran fine.

Do you live near high tension wires or an aviation VOR/DME or something that gives off a lot of electromagnetic energy?

No, I live directly next to a wildlife refuge in a rural country setting.

I have a lot of trees but no high voltage lines or other types of interference. The mission flies over some trees and does a triangular 'circle' around and oddly shaped pond and returns home.

can you borrow an iphone 11?  test the Samsung S10 variable by using an iPhone 11

Since the destination and path functions work flawlessly and only the gimbal and start capture functions seem to be blocked I hadn't considered interference but it is safe to say we don't have any strong emi or high voltage lines or other types of interference in the flight area.

The primary difference seems to be an iPhone vs an Android (Samsung) platform difference.

Well I do have access to an iPhone XS and I can try that later this week.

Hi Tommy and Jim - I just got things (gimbal orientation and take picture) working. I built a quick test that simply points the gimbal to various degrees from 20 to -90 and take a picture at each variation. It worked perfectly.

The problem sadly we can say was PEBCAK. Problem exists between chair and keyboard... that's me. I figured out that I failed to check the mission log details to see the warnings that were in there for all the previous tests. Wow, sorry for missing that.

There were a bunch of camera warnings that I presume must make everything subsequent fail to execute?

Once I fixed those warnings everything worked as far a gimbal orientation and take picture. I made a simple take picture component that does work and yes from my android. :-)

I will apply this lesson to an actual flight plan next but I am confident I won't make the same mistake again. Thank you for your patience.

I just tried a destination plan with photo shots and a path plan with video and they worked perfectly.

    Path video: https://app.dronelink.com/p986/share/plan/ZHY5yIlRgBYDunwo8HJV/SqwTC2TVxDc7oRmxOhQs

    Destination photo shots: https://app.dronelink.com/p986/share/plan/DZMq3ZxwjDRzcMZ0aDET/O1PDnomSGNDa0CRxsLGU

I'm sorry I should have watched more of the videos before asking for help.

    I made two critical mistakes.

I have learned to check the mission logs for errors and warnings. I was only looking for errors on the screen during flight and also while building the mission but the flight logs help log what actually happens during the mission.

Also I learned that when I used mission verification instead of load mission I experience the false symptom that things aren't working. I almost had the same thought this morning until I decided to try load mission and then I saw that everything really does work.

Thanks again to you both Jim and Tommy !

What made you want to run it as a verification mission?

I'd have to say just ignorance on my part.

I tried to fly too soon before absorbing the videos and ended up learning the hard way.

I apologize and thanks for your patience.

    That's great!
The videos that DroneLink has are excellent!  I watched about twenty videos before trying anything.

Dronelink support is also excellent and quick to respond.

Yes they are great and make it easy to get started. I got too eager to try.

I'm going back to watch and finish or at least the 20 or so you finished.
