Follow Mode Feedback/Impressions

Chris Laframboise

Just recently discovered and started testing the Follow mode - didn't realize you had to sign-up for the beta to test it out even though I was an original beta tester before Dronelink became a paid app.

Anyway, I tested it on both my Spark and P3S and it worked beautifully on both drones, especially on my P3S in a brisk wind. I have always loved the Follow mode on AutoPilot and have never found any other flight app as reliable at tracking as Follow on AutoPilot until Dronelink. Dronelink has made setup of a Follow mission easy and simple. One of the things that always concerns me with Follow/tracking missions is the movement away from the home point but Dronelink seems to be dynamically updating the home point as you move away from the original home point. As I moved my homepoint kept updating to my current location. I didn't test this feature as it was windy and cold but may get test it later. Can anyone confirm that Dronelink does in fact dynamically update the home point? The other feature that the Follow mission seems to have that I will need to explore more is terrain follow (being able to adjust altitude for changes in altitude) which I assume is done when the controller/device changes altitude similar to a feature in AutoPilot.

Anyway, I am very happy with the Follow feature implementation in Dronelink and look forward to using it more.

Hi Chris. The drone records its home point. I’m fairly sure if you hit RTH it would go back to the original take off or home point location recorded. The updating I believe your talking about is your devices GPS. This is how your Drone follows you. It follows the device based on the devices GPS. Same thing with my cheap Holy Stone drone which has follow mode in app. It will follow me and my device but returns to original home point if I hit RTH. Hope I’m understanding your question correctly and this helps.

    Good luck and enjoy.

It does, unless you answer no to this question (when you choose the advanced options):

    Thanks for the replies above.
When I did my initial testing it was just a quick test as it was windy so I bypassed the advanced settings. So does it automatically choose dynamic home point if you don’t answer ‘no’ in the advanced panel?

I will try to do more testing on the weekend. I’ll have the drone follow me as I walk on the lake ice and then initiate RTH and see if it returns to where I am and not my starting point. This is important for me because I canoe/kayak with my drones so having a dynamic home point is crucial - can’t have drone going back to starting point and landing in water!
