Unknown location error

David Tolson

I failed to be able to execute the attached mission today as when I pressed play to run the mission I got the error 'unknown location'. I was in the precise take off spot and it was not the message you get when the take off location is incorrect, it was different. This mission was from the end of the longest pleasure pier in the world 2km out to sea but I had 14 satellites locked so cant understand the problem. Grateful for advice.

That error means that for some reason the DJI SDK has not reported the drone's location to Dronelink. Sometimes you may need to restart the drone and/or Dronelink to get the DJI SDK to wake up.

Thanks Jim. So wish Id have known that. I had to travel to the pier then had a 5km return walk to the location and today was the last day of fine weather for the foreseeable, wind and rain forecast for the next couple of weeks.:( Still you live & learn. I'm guessing if I had gone into DJI fly first and set the location that would have helped.

Sorry about that! Always best to fly high-stakes missions in a low-stakes environment first to iron out all the kinks.

I experience the same thing. Including trying an on the fly mission.  I got the message that i was 16m away from start of mission but I started the mission and got "unknown location" error, it wouldn't start. I will try again if this occurs and restart.

That sheds a little more light on things. There may be an issue when you have a takeoff restriction set. David- can you confirm that you only see this issue when that is true?

Hi Jim, I didn't try it without a take off restriction as I was on a small deck over the sea I wanted a tight take off area. I will go out and try with and without in my local park and report back but can't do this for a few days as the weather is wet and windy here in UK at the moment

Thanks. Make sure to try it once with and once without to get a good test in.

    Hi Jim,

I moved my mission from the pier head to the local park and again tried to execute with the same small specific take off location. However I did not get the 'Invalid location' message this time but still the mission failed to execute.

You will see from the short screen capture in the link that when I press play the 3-2-1 take off countdown runs and then I get the error message 'Drone take off location is 0m outside the required take off location'

Note the 0m: I was at pains to position the drone precisely.

When I remove the takeoff restriction and set None the mission executes correctly

Hope this is of some use

How big was the takeoff restriction zone on the map? Can you post a link to the mission that had it set? Was the Drone positioned right on the edge of the orange circle?

The orange circle says 20, i'm guessing that means 20ft. I can't say with absolute certainty that I was in the centre or at the edge but I thought it aught to be happy as it did the countdown and reported 0 m. Maybe I should have moved it another foot or so and tried again. I can have another try tomorrow. I had kept the circle deliberately small as this represents the exact take off area I needed on the pier which failed with the 'unknown location'

I moved this exact mission plan to our test field and it flew great. I think you must have had the drone just outside the takeoff restriction zone (< 1m) and it rounded the number down to say 0m.

    How's my luck :(

As the unknown location error never materialised again. In going to try the end of the pier again and see if I can get a good mission from what this has taught me. Thanks for all your help.
