Never mind -- it's a Firefox problem: I thought I'd try showing the relevant map on the Google Maps site first, to see if that fixed the problem, but maps aren't showing up (for me at least) on their site, either. I'll just use Chrome.
If anyone else has this problem, I found a (weird) solution on one forum. Close Firefox and start it again in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key as you double-click its start icon, and then in the pop-up select Start in Safe Mode. Go to Google maps and view any map, then close Firefox and restart it.

Are you using a VPN or some other custom settings in FF only?
