"Target Distance" in map components

I'm new to Dronelink and am a bit confused about the "target distance" option and how that differs from altitude assuming the map is in AGL? I tried my first mission yesterday at it was a total failure, so any help on the matter would be great.

If you are flying at x feet above the takeoff location, but want to use a different number to compute GSD, that is target distance.

I do not understand, please elaborate.

Example:

If the roof is 20 meter above HomePoint and I plan to fly 30 meters above the rooftop, how do I set the picture overlap correct?
