I tried to fly my first Dronelink mission today.
It did not get off square.

A simple path mission with a couple of POI.

As soon as the mission started at the first destination the app reported “Drone to far off course, mission dismissed”. Restarted the mission the got another message soon after the mission started, “Telemetry delay, mission dismissed”.

I am using a Mavic Pro and iPad Air 2, killed all apps so Dronelink was the only app running.

Any thoughts, looks like system resource issues similar to Autopilot.

Dronelink, like Autopilot, runs the flight control on your mobile device, and it does not do well on 5-year-old devices like the iPad Air 2. You can read more about the performance considerations here.  I highly recommend using a device that was released within the last 2 years.

Thanks Jim for the feedback. FYI I also tried my iPhone 7 that has the A10 same as the latest 10.2 inch iPad all be it at a much lower clock speed with the same result. Looks like I need to be the latest iPad Air or Pro that have the A12 and A12x cpus respectively.

If you share the mission plan I would be happy to test it out just to make sure there isn't a bug.

    My first share

it is just a flight path with a couple of poi. I set the camera up manually.

Just tried my wife’s iPhone 8. It has an A11 Bionic at 2.74ghz.

Same result within seconds of the mission starting a Dronelink alert reports the “drone is to far off coarse, 17m”

the distance portion of the warning obviously varies.

what apple product do you recommend as best for Dronelink missions?

I just ran this mission on a M2 Pro with an iPhone XS Max and it did not have any issues for me. In general we recommend using a mobile device that was released within the last 2 years.

Thanks the XS Max has the A12 Bionic at 2.49ghz exactly the same as the latest iPad mini and Air. That’s good know if I buy won it will work. All the best for the New Year (eve here), I hope Dronelink takes off in 2020.

I have an iPhone XS Max and have experienced the same issues you have mentioned - too far off course when doing a few recent mappings using the Dev version of the app plus the 'device running too slow' (both on dev and normal apps).

The base performance of the mobile device is one of many factors that can affect the mission. Other factors include battery level and direct sunlight / high ambient temperatures (both of which can cause the OS to under-clock the mobile device), flight performance of the drone (some drones are higher performance than others), RC signal strength / interference, and winds aloft. At mission planning time, Dronelink attempts to intelligently apply a kinematic model that is a balance between performance, consistency, and safety, but it does not work for all combinations of mobile devices, drones, and environmental conditions 100% of the time. This kinematic model is why you see it slow down below the target speed around sharp turns in the mission previewer, something Autopilot never did - it just required the user to see the issue during flight and reprogram it manually.

If you see the types of messages that have been discussed above, consider the following remedies:

    1. Upgrade to a faster device
    2. Upgrade to a larger, more powerful drone
    3. Fully charge the battery of the mobile device before flight
    4. Use a sunshade
    5. Use an active cooling system
    6. Slow down the mission plan
    7. Straighten out the mission plan
    8. Do not fly as far away during the mission
    9. Do not fly near heavy sources of RF interference

I purchased an iPad mini 5 cell and got the same result, a few seconds into the flight “drone off coarse”

it looks like the Mavic Pro does not cut it with dronelink, works fine using Autopilot flight controller.

Apart from a bit hazy from the many bushfires surrounding us (Sydney) the temperature is 26c (45c yesterday) no wind, battery fully charged.

i will try Dronelink again in the future when I upgrade my Mavic Pro which I have had since 2016.

it looks a good product with great support and simulation tools.

Being a software developer I love the modular, component based architecture.

The "too far off course warning" was only recently added, and it is based off a hard-coded value of 50ft. We could expose that number as a setting if you want to let it wander further before giving up...

But first, I would suggest reducing the velocity and/or the acceleration before you give up. Velocity can be set easily at markers. Acceleration can be found in the advanced settings of the plan (H. Acceleration):

Just ran across this thread... I'm having this same problem with multiple missions (April 8, 2020).  I'm running both a Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, same issues with both aircraft.  My controller is a brand new DJI Smart Controller.  I have not tried piloting as yet with my iPhone X or my iPad Pro 10.5, I do have the native app installed on both.

I deleted all the failed missions, then created a simple mission to help me understand markers and altitude adjustments more thoroughly, no camera commands at all other than an Immediate Component of video preset and an Achieved Component of a 3 second wait which I thought would help the drone stabilize.  The mission simulates perfectly.  The first time I ran it yesterday it also executed perfectly, no issues.  Then I ran it again a little while later and it would not execute due to the "drone too far off course" message.

I'm sharing the mission in case anyone has time to take a look.

I will make suggested adjustments above for approach speed, acceleration, etc., and try them next time I can go fly.  My approach in this mission is fast, then the mission itself runs much slower.

I'm so excited about the possibilities here but don't feel comfortable upgrading to Pro until I know it works for me.  I'm assuming the issue is mine and not Dronelink, but just need some help.

Thanks for any feedback you guys can provide!

Let me know if it works to slow it down.

Hi Jim, slowing it down worked.  I ran the mission 4 separate times, no errors.  I also copied the mission plan and made a few tweaks.  That one ran 3 times with no errors.

I've had two other issues I'd like to report.  First, I've had the Native App stop operating several times on my Smart Controller.  I look down and the screen is blank, no connection with the aircraft.  At that point, I just take my hand off the sticks, exit to the main menu and restart the application.  It always restarts fine and reconnects to the aircraft.  Yesterday it happened once, but it has happened two times previously.  All other apps were closed save for the Smart Controller wireless connection to my cell phone hot spot.  This has never happened with Go 4, just FYI.

Second, I had an OBJ or String error yesterday at a marker which aborted a mission that I've run several times before for practice with no previous issues.  I'm sorry I didn't think to take a photo of it with my phone so I can't be more specific.  It has never happened before.

I've decided to invest in a Pro membership.  You've got a great foundation here and I'd like to support it.

    Thank you... Marv

Which mission plan was giving you issues?

Jim it was this one, the error message was generated when I hit Marker 5, or approximately at Marker 5.

I just ran this mission now and it did not get an error message.

I've flown it several times previously with no error messages as well, and it simulates fine.  The last time I flew it is when I received the error.  I'll try it again a few more times and let if you know if I encounter any recurrence.  Thanks for taking a look.
