I've been trying out some different settings to see what works best. I've found that to get a good 3D model as well, that a -70 gimbal and the generic overlap on a grid pattern works best.
I have experimented in the past with different angles and heights. On a nearby new development I meshed together some different views to see what works. What I found is:
1. Camera directly facing ground with two passes (grid) was best for overall picture, 3D was not good for this.
2. Camera 70 degrees down with two passes (grid) was good for 3D and 2D. For whatever reason it did appear as if the location of the map was slightly off compared to the map in ODM (if you use the opacity slider to see the difference).
3. Camera 90 degrees down on one pass and 70 degrees down on the other - it was ok for both 3D and 2D. Options above were better.
So what I will be doing personally is not worrying about the 3D view and instead focusing just on the 2D and using 90 degrees down on both passes. Just need to make sure that you do enough area over the "edge" so you don't lose any detail you want. This was all on flat-ish ground. I will be testing on a farm soon that ranges in height from 800 metres above sea level down to 300 metres above sea level.

Nice work. Did you do 3D as well?

The 2D version is here: http://142.93.56.133:8000/public/task/27980e8d-1833-4aa6-a6be-c8ad2895a146/map/
Check out the 3D version here: http://142.93.56.133:8000/public/task/27980e8d-1833-4aa6-a6be-c8ad2895a146/3d/ (click on 'Textured Model' and then the checkbox for 'Show Model'.
Yes, I did. The imaging is not so great on mine, the only good thing is that It was done on my box.
I still have much to learn about ODM.
This one was done from 177 20MP images and took about 1.5 hrs to run. I should have done it from a higher altitude and will re do it.
