Connect to drone in android

Hi all.  Sorry if this is a daft question but I have a Mavic Air and am trying to connect the android app to it.  Can this only be done in wifi mode?  I've been trying to connect using the cabled controller but no joy.

WiFi mode works so I'm wondering if this is the only way.

    You can connect via a cable. When you plug the cable in, the OS will prompt you to choose an app to open for the accessory, and you need to select Dronelink.
