Mission plan disconnect with DJI mini 3 pro

Olivier Couture

Hello,

We have been conducting forest surveys for several months using Dronelink and about ten DJI Mini 3 Pro drones. We are located in Canada and have been users for about a year (since the Beta version). For about a month now, the flight plans have been disconnecting. We have about ten drones and users with the following versions: Dronelink 4.9.0, 4.9.3, and 4.9.4, all tested with different mobile devices: Google Pixel, Samsung, Blackview, etc.

Symptoms: the flight plan stops, and we have to restart the mission using the "play" button several times, and sometimes, it doesn't work at all. The only option is to return home.

The only drone that always works is the one that hasn't had the DJI update installed. Is this issue known on your side or by others?

Problematic mission plan example: https://app.dronelink.com/olivier-couture-IcJghiZb2WZzbv5mZFTQ/mon-premier-projet/plan/ZZ50hNgM4rhY7I2o70Qw/AxJh0P7OcJJgP7ZoVUiH

DJI update proposition on the working drone :

Thank you.

    Can you downgrade the other drones to confirm the older firmware works?

    Hi Olivier. This has nothing to do with the issue you’re having just an observation. I checked your plan abs you set the camera to Mini 3 Pro (48MP) which a lot of pilots do but don’t realize that it will not capture High Resolution photos. In order to capture those you will need a Growth plan and then you can’t set the “Photo Type” to High Resolution which will then capture 48MP. Just so you are aware of how it works.

    Hi Jim, I’m going to try everything today or tomorrow; it's a drone at work. Thanks for the quick response!

    Hi Mike, thanks for the information, I wasn’t aware of that. I now have a Growth account, so I’ll give it a test. Thanks!

    Hello Jim, here's an update on my issue.

    I tried to roll back the DJI updates, but it wasn't possible. However, I noticed that my DJI Fly app wouldn’t open anymore. So, I had to delete it and reinstall it. Once reinstalled, I allowed all data sharing (location, etc.) with DJI. I then flew the drone manually with DJI Fly without any issues.
    Finally, I relaunched my Mini 3 Pro with Dronelink and started a 4-minute flight plan. Everything went smoothly. I will do another test this afternoon with a longer flight plan. The device I’m using is a Blackview 5300 Plus with Android 13. This phone and Dronelink disconnected last time. I’ll keep you updated on my flight this afternoon.

    Hello Jim,

    Quick update, we encountered another issue, this time with a DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise. The same symptoms appeared, with the mission disconnecting repeatedly for an unclear reason, and the drone was unable to restart it. Sometimes, when the drone reconnects, it returns to the last point to resume the mission but stays static. The 'follow terrain topo' function was enabled.

    Here are the mission plan : https://app.dronelink.com/olivier-couture-IcJghiZb2WZzbv5mZFTQ/mon-premier-projet/plan/80mCq000I45XayaO4hlq/kRgc81vtSQID5dZC95Xk and https://app.dronelink.com/olivier-couture-IcJghiZb2WZzbv5mZFTQ/mon-premier-projet/plan/80mCq000I45XayaO4hlq/kRgc81vtSQID5dZC95Xk

    Thank you

    Is the connection between the drone and controller disconnecting from a signal loss or is it disconnecting from the app ? If it is disconnecting from the app are you sure the DJI App has been forced closed. Usually disconnecting and reconnecting problems can be due to the DJI app still running in the background. If it is then it will try reconnecting between the two. May not be why but it is fairly common when both are open. Just a thought.

    Hi Mike, I'm working with Olivier. The problem is that it is disconnecting from the app. In that particular case, it maybe due that the DJI App hasn't been forced closed. I'll make sure it is in the next flight. Althought, it's not the case in many of our flight with the mini 3 pro where the DJI App isn't even install on the mobile device.

    Elsewhere, I think that the “follow ground elevation” in the growth plan might be part of the problem. You can access 2 plans below where the plan stopped for an obvious reason as frequent, and when we repress the play button, the drone stays static at the last point. No way of finishing the plan.

    Follow this link to access my Dronelink plans :

    We’re having these problems on both Mini 3 Pro with the RC-N1 and the Mavic 3 E with the RC Pro Enterprise. All remote and applications (DJI and Dronelink) are up to latest versions.

    Other problems seen :

    • Getting super high altitude for no reason
    • Drone spinning in round while going up to the altitude plan
    • Impossibility of taking back the control of the drone : “N” remote mode

    Thanks for your help because we're clueless of whats happening right now. Everything was working fine this summer :(

    Sorry Guy I was referring to the recent Mavic 3E problem you posted, not the Mini 3 issues.

    It sounds like the same issue being described here (which we have not been able to reproduce): https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/33052990089747-DJI-Mini-3-Pro-odd-dangerous-behaviour-with-flight-plan

    As in the other thread, have you tried the latest beta (5.0.0)?

    Hello everyone, thanks for the feedback. I'll share more flight plans that caused issues.

    Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro: I performed a flight plan using both a Mini 3 Pro and a Mini 3. The flight plan was duplicated in Dronelink, and I used the same Blackview 5300 phone for both. The Mini 3 Pro mission went smoothly (link), but with the Mini 3, the drone started spinning while ascending. I lost control of the drone, had to close the app, and then reopen it. When I closed it, the screen showed 88m altitude, but when I reopened, it showed 120m. After that, the drone seemed "stuck" and couldn’t complete the mission. I even struggled to control it manually. Here’s the mission plan: link.
    And here’s a screenshot from my phone: screenshot.

    Mavic 3E: The drone stops mid-flight and hovers at the easternmost point. I suspect this is due to the "follow ground altitude" function; the drone was supposed to go above 120m, but I think it’s unable to. I redid the flight with altitude set from the home point, and it worked perfectly. Here’s the mission plan: link

    I feel that the issue in both cases is related to altitude. Even in manual mode with the Mini 3, I couldn’t get it to fly above 6-7m. I could move it laterally and descend without issues, but it wouldn’t ascend. I ended up closing everything and restarting by doing the mission directly. The altitude gain was very slow and didn’t seem reliable.

    Quick question: On my Blackview 5300, I downloaded the Dronelink version for the Mini 3 Pro and I use it for both mini 3 and mini 3 pro. Is there a difference between the app for the Mini 3 Pro and the Mini 3?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi there, regarding the altitude issue (120m max), we discovered that it’s managed through the drone's settings in Dronelink, which defaults to 120m. We’ve now adjusted the setting to a higher altitude, and everything is working perfectly. Just wanted to let you know we’ve resolved it — it was mainly due to our initial lack of knowledge.

    As far the mini 3 and mini 3 pro flight problems, we will provided you more flight plan so that you can find out a solution. Thanks for your fast feedback as always!

    Hello everyone,

    Apologies for the delay in my response; I’ve been conducting tests with the Beta version 5.0.0 on my Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro to replied to you Jim. I also took the time to review Philippe’s response in the meantime. Afterward, I did additional tests, but unfortunately, I continued to encounter issues with both the Beta version and Philippe's procedure (thank you again for your help, Philippe).

    Beta Version 5.0.0(without Philippe's procedure): The drones worked relatively well; they took off and started the flight without unexpectedly spinning or disconnecting. The issue was that they couldn’t follow the flight plan and consistently deviated from the flight path. I suspected that the calibration of the drones might be the cause.

    Beta Version 5.0.0 + Philippe's Procedure: I recalibrated the drones through the DJI Fly app and followed the procedure shared by Philippe. The following flights were more challenging. I experienced an issue with the Mini 3 Pro, which could no longer connect to Dronelink. For the Mini 3, I was able to connect it, and when the mission started, the drone reached the starting point, set the camera to -90 degrees, but instead of moving forward, it began taking pictures while spinning in place.
    Here are the flight plans:

    • Hello, I tried using the Mini 3 Pro again on a flight plan that had worked well previously, and I encountered the following issues:

      - At the first turn, the drone started spinning in place;
      - I attempted to pause the mission, but the application seemed to have frozen;
      - I had to close and restart the application to resume the mission, which then continued without further issues;
      - After changing the battery and resuming the flight, the application indicated that the mission was in progress at an altitude of 120m. However, I noticed that the drone was descending and had reached approximately 30m, deviating from the planned route. I quickly took manual control as the drone drifted towards houses, estimating its altitude at around 40m, despite the application still showing 120m.

      Here's my mission plan : https://app.dronelink.com/olivier-couture-IcJghiZb2WZzbv5mZFTQ/mavic-3-e/plan/WWOYeW5i43fbQdsDhMvj/LyRxtBzn84JGVTUnPrm1

      I’m unsure of the next steps. We are currently conducting tests with the DJI flight planner and Litchi mission hub and have not encountered any issues with the same drones (Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro) and phones (mostly Blackviews and Samsung). We much prefer Dronelink for its web interface, ease of flight planning, and configuration settings, but we cannot afford to risk losing field days or potentially damaging our drones. As a result, we will recommend an alternative to our user group for now. However, I will continue testing on my end if you have any suggestions or solutions. If Dronelink stabilizes for us, we would be interested in using it within our network of about 30 users. Thank you.

    At the first turn, the drone started spinning in place;

    This is the same issue being discussed in this thread: https://support.dronelink.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/33052990089747-DJI-Mini-3-Pro-odd-dangerous-behaviour-with-flight-plan

    As we have already stated over there, we cannot reproduce the issue and the flight logs need to be sent to DJI for us to make any progress.

    Bonjour Philippe,

    Je vais poursuivre les tests selon vos recommandations et envoyer les journaux de vol à DJI. Toutefois, nous concentrerons davantage nos efforts sur Flight Planner et Litchi.

    Merci pour votre aide et bonne journée.
