Alternative to GeoNADIR “Tile Mapping Service”

Bradley Hall
Hi. I can create an orthomosaic on GeoNADIR, and publishing them using GeoNADIR’s “TMS” or tile mapping service. I use these as map layers in ArcGIS Online. I no longer wish to use GeoNADIR. Turning in the TMS feature requires more than $500 per year, and just using GCPs to create the orthomosaic means I need to contact them for a quote which is something I consider basic functionality so I just want an alternative to GeoNADIR Can anyone enlighten me? That is, is there a (free) place to publish orthomosaicsa as a tile mapping service?

I think we need some additional information to give a proper answer.

    • Are you only looking to show the 2D ortho or other features?
    • Are you looking for something that can process or just share?
    • If you are looking for something that can process, what features do you need?  e.g. do you need to just create an ortho or does it need the software to be able to handle GCPs, etc?
    • Do you clients want to view it in a desktop app (and do they have the knowledge to do that) or do they need access through an online portal?

Once we have that I might be able to offer some suggestions

    Thank you, Barry

I am working on a specific project, to add to my skills. So there is the minimum functionality that I need for this project, and then there is the ideal capability I would prefer.

While it is not for public consumption, because I am just prototyping it…
    * my site is in Montclair, NJ. It is Presby Iris Gardens.

    * I migrated the garden’s database of its collection, to a GIS by adding location data for each planting. I made a web map on ArcGIS as a prototype. (I will provide link below.)

    * to this web map I wish to add aerial photography. The “story” is to add orthomosaics as map layers in the ArcGIS web map. The layers will show the progression of the bloom season each year, and year to year. I want to also find machine learning tools to recognize when a flower is in bloom (should be straight forward?)

    * so I used Dronelink to plot out a mapping mission over the garden, and I have run it several times, tweaking it.

    * I trialed GeoNADIR to create the orthomosaic, and use the TMS (tile mapping service) to publish as a map layer in my web map of Presby garden. It was fine, except I need to correct location using GCPs. I think GCPs are just foundational, and have to be included. So I don’t like the idea of having to contact GeoNADIR for a quote on them.  If I could create an orthomosaic that was GCP-corrected on GeoNADIR, I would be happy with the tile map service. It is just I am looking for a free or at least cheaper alternative.

    * I know I can use GCPs with Web ODM (I use Lightening) to make an orthomosaic. So if I could find a way to publish the result as a tile map service, I would be happy.

    * I am about to trial “Arc Image for ArcGIS Online,” to see if it meets my needs. It seems to offer mosaicking, so I need to learn about its use of GCPs and whatever other issues arise. And, as long as I can use it for my web map in ArcGIS online, I am happy, and being able to publish to others as a tiling service would be an extra (I think tile map service publishing is included in Arc Image).  There will be a cost, however given the option I may prefer to keep everything in ArcGIS to keep things simple.

This link ought to take you to my prototype of the web map on ArcGIS, without drone imagery

Now, this should be my web map using the GeoNADIR tiles as the base map…

[er, no—it doesn’t seem to obey when I make my tile map a layer or a new base layer.  Take my word that the ortho is off-base, which is only to be expected]

The orthomosaic needs to be corrected using GCPs, unless I’m mistaken

    Hi Bradley Hall

Interesting. I have a few thoughts.  I have to start by saying I know pretty much nothing about ArcGIS, but here are a few suggestions.

    1.  WebODM can process GCPs.  They have a tool called GCP Pro which you have to buy but it's very cheap - certainly compared to $500 a month!

    2.  You can use WebODM for inspection purposes.  This will allow you to put markers on there where the photos were taken and have the actual photo pop up when the user clicks on it.  You can see how to do that here:  https://youtu.be/vjsRt6kbpF4

    3.  You can host WebODM on a public server yourself if you have geeky tendencies.  See information on that here https://youtu.be/OzrHEpZQ6L0

Hosting will cost you about $25 per month (you can't use the free tier for that) if you process locally and upload.  Alternatively, you can use WebODM lightning to host your maps and make them visible via the web.  That is about $35 per month but simplifies things considerably.

You didn't say which drone you are using but if you are using a Mavic 3E with an RTK module (or similar) then you can use RTK and/or PPK to correct the location of the photos and skip the GCP step.  More on that here:  https://youtu.be/IRTsbheD__c

That said, GCPs and especially checkponts are always a good idea but...I haven't published that video yet :)

I'm about 45 minutes away from Montclair, BTW.

Thanks Barry, I am about to watch that video.

Yes I see you are around Wyckoff.

By the way, this iris garden, Presby, is going into peak bloom season which will last for maybe the next 2 weeks. I want to capture it with my videography, because it is an awesome sight, just jaw-droppingly pretty. However I don’t have the experience and skills yet to do it justice that way.

So if for recreation you wish to drop by and take some shots, I would love to know (would need to be early or late in day, to avoid overflying people. Or we could even clear the garden, with agreement of its President since I work there.)

    Hi Bradley Hall

I'm pretty crushed with work right now and trying to fit everything in before I head off on vacation.

But check out some standard shots that you might want to use for inspiration

Would love to collaborate on something in the future.
