Car movement during mapping missions.

Benjamin
So I ran my first mapping mission. Actually overall got pretty good results, the only area that I did not is when a car pulled into the parking lot and along a few of the fence lines but 85% was acceptable for the height I flew. The back of a few cars were blown out pixels kind of scattered everywhere. Almost looked like bad paused CGI from the 90's. Same with the fence line but a lot less noticeable. Currently I work second shift so the only real time I can go out and fly during the week is around noon time and I know that's not the best for mapping. Is there anything I can do to compensate for that? I'm using dronelink to plan and maps made easy to process. Is there any settings I should change for flying around noon time, and if I do see car movement while mapping, should I fly over that area again and take a few pictures after the mission is over?

Hi Benjamin. Looks like your question has been maybe missed and it’s been a few days so I’ll try to help. First of all what drone are you using ? To be clear I have a very limited amount of experience when it comes to actually creating 2D or 3D images. I have run a fair amount of mapping components over the years but I don’t really do any software stitching. There is much you can do with any moving object. Depending on what the interval time is it may not affect it much since the vehicle may be in and out of the shooting area fairly quick. Objects like fences are tougher because there is not much surface area to capture. Others have mentioned they set the gimbal angle to somewhere between -83 to -87 to capture depending on their preference which I understand can help with capturing objects better. The other defaults values should work for most mapping missions. Unless you have a drone with a mechanical shutter you will need to fly slower and/ or at a higher altitude so you won’t get motion blur and just clearer photos to work with. If that is not any issue then try the gimbal at a different value and make sure you have the speed and altitude set so you will get as clear as possible photos to start with. You can retake more photos of any area if you want and you can see where those captures were taken when you actually ran the mission. Just access that flown mission in the Web app and click in the photos icon and it will indicate where they were actually taken, (little red dots). As I mentioned I don’t do actual software stitching but sometimes it can be the software settings itself. You may want to check for a “Maps made easy” forum or group which actually uses that software. All the DL app does is capture the photos based on those component settings and even though you can get it to take good quality photos, much of it is in the actual processing. Maybe someone else which does actual photogrammetry can assist more. Hope that helps a bit. Enjoy.

I have an Air2s. I appreciate you reaching out as this weekend I'm going to a local vineyard. I told them I'd give them all the photos and videos for free as I just needed more experience and I was going to run a mapping mission as well. There is 12 in my area so I figured this would be a good portfolio starter. I went out last weekend. It rained luckily as I learned the importance of PreFlight checks and location scouting.

I'm pretty sure I could have flown the mission lower. It was my first time so I set the AGL at 220 as I wanted to be safe. About the gimbal angle, does that affect accuracy, at the cost of better looking maps? Either way I think I'm going to try looking into that, and maybe try it this weekend. Eventually I want to upgrade my software but a little expensive.

Last question, I'm using a tablet. You can download the maps offline. I forgot my tablet holder last time so I couldn't use it. But after I download an offline map can I edit the parameters without service?

You always need internet service, WiFi or cellular to create or edit any plan. There is no way to download the map for an area and use the Web app. The only thing you can download is the file for any of your plans you already created which can then be flown without any service.

For some strange reason it would not let me post this link in previous post. Good luck.
