orbit precision

Davide Piras

Hello, today I did a test of an orbit video with a Mini 2 because I'd like to repeat the same orbit for several month for a timelapse. The 3 same videos I did today I put them on final cut lowing the opacity to check if they were sincronized but I'm afraid they are not perfectly equal. Is there some parameter I might change to get them more precise?

Thanks

Davide

Unfortunately, GPS is just not that accurate and altitude (handled by the barometer) can be even worse vertically.

You can improve things using onboard components, and RTK (not available on the Mini 2) and using GPS correction (needs a higher level plan but details here https://youtu.be/34jYPRAmN1Y ).

Even with that there will likely be differences.

The best option is to run the mission multiple times on site, landing and restarting in between each shot, and then pick the best one for each day.

    Davide,

As Barry pointed out the GPS is not accurate enough to achieve perfect alignment. Just a suggestion, when I process a time-lapse sequence involving orbit missions, I simply use the transform tool to align the videos and have found the results to be pretty good. I use Davinci Resolve but I'm pretty sure you can do the dame thing in Final Cut.

Ok thank you both. Let me ask your opinion Joe...

I had this idea to make this orbit TL  or orbit video in the period of about one year (we also have fixed point cameras) and edit those clip somehow. Did you do something similar and could you tell me how you proceed?

    Thank's

    Davide,

Yes, I have created several time lapse videos from orbit missions, they were all over a period of either weeks or months none as long as a year, however the workflow will be the same. I simply created an orbit mission and then ran it repeatedly over whatever period I was looking to cover. I then took all the videos and stacked them in Davinci to align them. Once aligned I staggered them out and place video transitions in between each clip. The result is a continual video showing progression of project.

Oh ok Joe, do you have a link just to see how it came out or is something private?

Here is a link to one of the first ones I did, I have since refined the alignment process and end up with a more fluid final product but this will give you an idea of what it looks like. It was shot in 4k so you can choose this on the settings cog when viewing.

I have done this many times - often with photos, but the very first one I ever did was video over 1 year.

You can see them here:  https://vimeo.com/showcase/6018898

Since then my flying, planning and editing skills have all improved so I would do a better job now.  But...it was good for where I was at the time :)

    Barry,

LOL.....the author and narrator of 5MF's.....you're too modest, your videos have been instrumental in my ongoing learning process of not only DL but WebODM as well. You have a great speaking voice, very easy to listen to....: )

    Thank you,

    Joe D

thank's Barry, I've seen them. Actually I'd like to make more a timelapse action more then dissolving from picture to picture but I guess it's not that easy with a drone. Another question: looking at the panel there are things I do not understand like " altitude range..below...above ) or other actions or command to plan missions. Is everything explained in the Dronelink tutorials or there is something else where I can learn from?

    Thank's

    Davide

Davide Piras. It is impossible to explain every function, feature, command or settings but there is a lot of other assistance with help articles and some tutorial videos. As far as the basic default settings like Altitude, above/below, horizontal/vertical ascent & descent rates and others in that settings tab, it’s best to not change any of those settings. They have been tested to work the best and changing them may cause issues when running the mission and it may fail. I’ve been using DL for over three years and even though I have a good understanding of how they work I don’t usually change most of them. The altitude above & below are set so when the mission is executed the drone ascends up first to within approx 15’ of the plans set altitude before moving forward. So if you change those to let’s say 75’ with a plans set altitude to 100 ‘ then the drone will start moving forward at about 25’ before getting more altitude and the drone could fly into something. This is obviously one of the most important settings for safety reasons. Hope that helps. Enjoy.

The links that Mike shared a a great start.

I also put out as many videos as I can, usually in 5 minutes or less to make them easy to digest.  You can follow just the dronelink specific ones here:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLK_joCFfIhJ9rhEs7b-pW0u0LQBfW4sPc
