Mapping loses control - Pro 3 with RC-N1, Samsung Galaxy Tab E

Dan Boyt

New to this but have searched for an answer and no dice.  Trying to do a simple mapping mission to understand settings.

https://app.dronelink.com/dan-boyt/my-first-project/plan/X5jA4y61WZEUeSfMAMAP/Ff311lInwu1eINuewRsa

It starts out OK but then starts to yaw and act strange.  Capture intervals become irregular.  When it gets to the end of the first leg it spins around a few times before failing the mission.  Video capture from tablet linked below.  I have slowed to 6mph and set the minimum capture interval to 5s.

Two potential issues:

  • Inexpensive tablet.  Is this model suitable?  Seems to do OK except during this type of mission.
  • As can be seen in the second screenshot, the Camera Capture starts and runs for 2s and there is a separate command to take the actual pictures.  It seems that we're enabling and disabling the capture function unnecessarily but I see no way to just have it run continuously.

Have been fighting this for a while.  Any insights appreciated.

Can you try it at a different location, on a different device, or with a different drone to try to narrow down the cause?

I checked the Tab E and if I have the correct one it was released about 9 years ago in 2015 so extremely old. I’m believe it’s at least one of the issues of not the entire issue. The live feed freezing up is an indication of a possible low performance device as well as the shutter button. The first FAQ in DL help articles explains the requirements. If there is something with the app I’m sure Jim will look into it but my thoughts are the device which I’ve seen many, many times. If you don’t have a new modern device to try with then I’m not sure what else you can do except upgrade.

I have learned the hard way that cheaping out on a device is not worth it.  Luckily, I found a full-proof and safe way to test out hardware without the risk of losing money because I couldn't return it.

I have trying four different phones and three different tablets, I've settled with using the Google Pixel Tablet.  It's fast, robust, and very stable.  I think it's even more stable than the Galaxy tablets for this use case.

I've yet to really push the limits of the device using Dronelink because I still need to commit to a "commercial" level license but so far, I can say, for example, where other devices baulked on even loading the 3D preview and things like that, this tablet is powerful and has no issues.

I need to fly more to test out the stability though.  But this far, using it to run the DJI Fly App has been flawless with this thing.  Mine also has 128GB memory and I believe 8GB of internal RAM

I can try a different location, but this is my only drone and android device.  Will head out to another spot in a bit.  Thanks.

Very helpful.  Will let you know the outcome.

Note that from the "Support overview" page, it doesn't indicate that lower performance / older devices would be a problem, just that some specific devices are not supported and the S22 hasn't been tested.

    ----

Which Android Devices are Not Supported?

There are known issues with some devices, specifically the video feed no showing on the Mini 3:

Not Supported: Google Pixel 6 / 7, Samsung Galaxy s21

May have issues, not tested: Samsung Galaxy s22

    Thanks!

That is just a Mini 3 overview and it is a bit outdated. As far as I know those devices work but sometimes it takes time to update all the help articles. The link I sent is the main requirement page which explains about using modern hardware device released within a year or maybe two. Also another link about performance issues similar to what you’re seeing. The DL app is not drone specific so regardless of which drone the “device” requirements are the same. There is a lot of other help articles you can look through in that help section with a ton of information. Good luck.
