Creating KMZ files with Dronelink?

Tom Moore

I really enjoyed using Dronelink with my Air 2, and am greatly missing it with the Air 3 I'm now flying. I do understand that the Dronelink app that actually flies the drone relies on an SDK from DJI, which is apparently not coming for the Air 3, Mavic 3, Mini 4 Pro, etc., or any consumer-level drones.

But I'm seeing utilities from Litchi and others (https://www.waypointmap.com/  for example) that allow the creation of mapping routes that can then be tossed into an RC-2 or into the file structure on the iPhone or Android apps and then downloaded directly to the aircraft using KMZ files and the Waypoints feature.

I've really enjoyed creating routes with Dronelink's tools -- they are thoughtful and well-designed, and have had all the rough edges sanded off over the years, which I appreciate. I would love to be able to keep using Dronelink. Is there any thought to adapting those tools to creating KMZ files that can be transferred over to the aircraft and then flown with the DJI Fly app?  I know this cuts out the parts that you probably spent a ton of time on – the iOS and Android apps – but it would be tremendously useful.

I was set to ask the same after seeing waypointmap videos.

Seems like managing flights by kml instead of virtual sticks can be an option (especially when no sdk exist).

Would like to get some feedbacks as well.

I use the Litchi Utilities Wes Barris created some time ago and they are completely free. He does accept donations but has never charged anything. I can take a DJI Waypoint mission and convert to a CSV and import into DL and a Litchi CSV format to DJI Waypoint mission for my Air 3. Takes a bit of practice but I can do any plan really quick. He also has some other cool functions which I haven’t seen in other software. I think $15 per month for these utilities is rather steep to get the other functions other than basic waypoints. Also when you create a mapping type component it won’t be straight lines because DJI uses Bézier curves. It’s going to be all over the place as you can see in the video so it’s pretty much worthless at this point. I’d stick with the Litchi Utilities. Good luck.

    Thanks Mike.

But not sure to well understand the process.

I will wait for a 5MF to illustrate the same 🙂.

stéphane GARNIER. I thought the same way at first but it takes me literally about 60 seconds to convert my Air 3 waypoint mission into DL and run the mission preview. Takes about 3 minutes to convert a Litchi CSV to a DJI waypoint mission. It’s like anything else where the more you actually use it the better and quicker you get at using it. Not sure if Barry would want to do a 5MF on something like this because it’s completely separate from DL but that’s up to him and DL. I can help anyone if they want but this forum is not the place for a non DL specific subject especially with all the instructions needed. If anyone wants free assistance on using the free Litchi utilities they can Email me for more info. Enjoy. wyldwestaz@gmail.com
