Mini 3, RC-N1, Samsung S8

Alex

My girlfriend managed to dish out her old Samsung S8 when sorting the house on the weekend. So on my lunch I decided to bench test it with my Mini 3 and see if it runs better than my S21.

Setup Info:

  • Samsung S8
  • Android 9 (One UI 1.0) - There is an update I am avoiding but I think its best to not update this phone.
  • RC-N1
  • DJI MINI 3 (NOT THE PRO)
  • Kernel 4.7.0(260)

The mission:
I decided the best way to benchmark it was to map a local reserve I use for anything new I do with the drone, that and I wanted to play with WebODM for the first time in my lunch break.

The map was going to take 139 photos, with the drone at 20mph and it would have been a 9 minute run.

The results:

  • 1 crash when leaving auto orientation on and it moved from landscape to portrait
  • Mid way through about 3 minutes in the camera feed got stuck to a single frame, something I have also experienced on my S21 (usually when recording), see here

Other than that it performed well, on starting the app it did say this is a low performance phone etc etc, but for a flagship phone from a few years ago it was brilliant. I also did the performance test with the confetti prior to running this and everything appears buttery smooth. But I see what the developers mean when this is a lot more stable on older versions of android.

Unfortunately the ophiomorphic map is too large to share here which I produced but I was definitely impressed.

Finally, is there any way I can start my app in landscape, I find on both my S21 and my S8 that this for whatever reason causes some crashes. When I start the app it always starts in portrait and if I could just start it in landscape it means I don't have to turn off the orientation lock on my phone to turn it, then back on. Small thing but I am always forgetful and forget to turn the orientation lock back on.

We are considering adding an app setting to force landscape all the time.
