The drone has to be in normal for automated flights - you cannot change the mode.
If you are referring to manual flight - isn't there a switch on the controller to do that?
I am indeed referring to manual, and there is no physical button on the remote to do that.
The only way to change it is by opening the DJI Fly app and switch it there.

What is the procedure to accomplish this? Today I needed extra speed to return to home and tried switching to the DJI FLY app, which would not connect. With battery getting low, I didn't want to waste time to force stop DL and open the DJI FLY app. Is there another method to do this?
Not if you can’t change the speed but you are better off not switching anyway since it would just consume quicker. If you are using the Mini 3 then it has a mode speed switch but the best way is relying on the RTH to fly back at a continuous speed so it consumes the least amount of battery. It can be switched when In manual flight but it will need to be switched back again to run a mission. The return speed is the same when whether using the DJI or DL app in normal mode. So in normal mode (speed 2) depending on which drone the speed would be anywhere from 20 to 30 mph. The drones which use the DJI Fly app trigger the first RTH at about 20% so that should be more than enough to get it back.
