MAVIC AIR 2 RTH DON´T WORK

MARCO CARDONA

Hello
I use DroneLink for about three months now, since the test version for the Mavic air 2. In the final version the automatic RTH seems to not work, there are two missions already and I had to return the drone manually. I have configured all the correct parameters in the web application and I don't think I am doing something wrong. If you can help me please.
Greetings from Bolivia

I just ran this mission plan on our test Mavic Air 2 and RTH worked perfectly.

Since many of the DJI Fly app settings carry over to the DL app, I’m Curious if it may be due to DJI Fly app settings ?  Would that make a difference ?

I tested it on my MA2 last night and RTH worked perfectly. Also ran a multi-battery mapping mission over the weekend and the automatic RTH for the battery change, as well as the mission re-start, also worked perfectly.

    Hi!
I know it is not the subject of the post, but I have an urgent question to be resolved: What is the technique or methodology to cover large areas of land where more than one battery is needed? Did he pause the mission, return the drone, change the battery and continue the mission? I use a mavic air 2.
Thank you very much for the help.
    Greetings.

Hi Marco. Basically, Its smart enough to Auto return and land, then just power off Drone only and change the battery. Power it up and once ready just hit resume and it will continue to the last point and resume the mission with out interruption. Looks like your plan indicates 3 batteries. Hope this helps.

Here is a link to a comment I gave on another post about the battery change question.

    Good Luck. Mike..........

    Hello everybody
Please help at what height and what parameters do you recommend me to use for this mission:

Marco, since the elevation of your mapping area varies so widely, be sure to use “Ground Level” as your altitude reference instead of “Takeoff Location”. Check with your stitching software but you generally will want an altitude 4-5 times the height of your tallest structure on the map. Battery swaps are easy and work great with my MA2. Just be sure to keep your controller and Dronelink running and power off the drone only when you swap batteries, as Mike indicated above.

    Hi friends
When I process the photographs programmed in the mission with DroneLink, the data x, and z are generated. X and Y are correct, but the Z height is the height programmed in DroneLink. How do I make the height above sea level appear in the data to process?
    Thanks for your help.

Dronelink has no control over the metadata that DJI puts into the images.

Is anyone having issues with their Mavic Air 2 RTH not working after the latest firmware update?  I have a couple of units that RTH causes the drone to go up to the max height setting in DJI Fly and then just burn battery until it needs to land.  This is happening in the DJI Fly app and in Dronelink.

I’ve used DL for two years with my MA2 without issue. If it is set the “Action on Finish” to RTH in the plan then it should return. Can you share the plan ?

I’m not where I can share a plan at the moment. It’s doing it in the DJI app also. So not just a Dronelink issue. Doing it on multiple drones.

I think I found a solution. I had to adjust my RTH altitude higher than what my last waypoint altitude was. Once I did that I’ve been able to have successful RTH missions in Dronelink and DJI. I have been able to do RTH with the drone above and bellow the RTH altitude setting and it’s working normally now. Making that initial settings adjustment of the RTH higher than my last waypoint seemed to clear whatever bug I was having.

I went back out today and tested. My fix was not a fix. I started having RTH issues and tracked it down to the angle of which it started to return home. I’m in Texas and with the sun in the Southern Hemisphere at noon, I can fly south and have it RTH where it flies straight North. No issues. When I fly North and have it RTH to the south. Immediately has issues. I was able to repeat this several times and even flew at a few different angles to have the sun hit the sensors differently. My experience today tells me it’s an OA issue.

I've had problems with the sun causing obstacle avoidance to kick in - all sort of software.  It's worse in the winter.

This has been a marathon of testing between myself and one of my colleagues. We were able to track this down to a metric vs imperial setting change. We did ever possible calibration, update, etc possible. We typically operate in imperial units. After switching to metric in DL I was able to have successful RTH without fail. When changing back to imperial before exiting out of DL and rerunning a mission RTH failed, or stair stepped on return. Changed units back to metric and flew another mission. Successful RTH. Exited DL, opened DJI (imperial units), flew manually and hit RTH successful. Got back into DL and have been able to fly missions and have successful RTH in metric and imperial units. Not sure why the units had any impact on the RTH and the way the sensors were acting, but I have tested multiple missions from different directions and no issues.

Something else is going on John. I’ve never had any of those issues with my MA2 in almost 2-1/2 years. Anything is possible but never those issues with my drone. Shouldn’t matter if using imperial or metric and the waypoint altitude has nothing to do with the RTH altitude. As I always say and DJI reps will suggest to do the same, Refresh the drone and controller firmware and Calibrate IMU and Compass as well. Delete the DJI Fly App and re-install. First thing DJI will advise you to do. It will rule out all those as possible problem. Firmware is just software which controls the hardware and as all software, it can get muddled up/ corrupted. I’ve had two occasions in those 2-1/2 years in which nothing seemed to work. After I went through everything the issues were solved. DJI Assistant 2 (consumer drone series) PC software. Even if working now and firmware is up to date, I’d still refresh. Good luck John.

Thanks for the feedback. We did all of that. Testing on multiple units, we were able to try different steps to see what might work or not. Trust me, we exhausted every thing besides sending a drone in to DJI. We had one drone that we were able to get to work before we started documenting everything like we should have. We worked through every calibration, update, deleting apps, etc. The only thing we could identify that we hadn’t done was change the units. Didn’t make sense for that to cause any issue. Changed it, and immediately had success. Still doesn’t make sense to me, but the results say that it works.

    Hi John Gibson

Interesting.  Thanks for taking the time to try things out.  Software can be strange stuff.

This is a total guess but it's possible that the DJI firmware only accepts values in metric for the RTH value so when DL sends it 200ft it accepts it as 200m, bounces off the max height and never reached the RTH altitude.  Like a said a total guess.

But, if I could suggest another test for you to try.

Set the Max altitude to 400ft.  Set the RTH altitude in DL to 100ft.  100m is less than 400ft so if my thesis holds true then the RTH should work in that instance even if it is in imperial in DL and we have uncovered a mystery.  Just be sure you don't have any trees over 100ft anywhere nearby!

Let me know what you think.

    Barry

    Thanks Barry.

We have another MA2 that will be getting unboxed tomorrow.  If it has the same issue, I will definitely test out your theory.  I would test on the drones we've been working with, but after we got them to work, they have been solid.

I've used DL with Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro, Air 2S, Mavic Air 2, and Mavic 3E.  Never had anything like this come up before.  This has definitly been a weird problem to sort out.

I'll send an update once we test with the new MA2 tomorrow.

It is possible that it’s something with the drone. The new MA2 will give an idea if it is. Good luck.

I updated to the newer firmware which just came out about a week or so ago. I never had a chance to fly with it though. I just checked again and it has an update to fix an issue which may be why. Check your firmware again and see if there is another newer update. Looks like it is the same version number but it updated. I flew to test it and it does RTH with set to imperial which is what I use. It could have been the issue. Good luck.
