So no On The Fly Offline?

Andrew Busst

I have seen a few posts on this but just wanted to make sure I had it correct.

So I guess I must fly mainly in areas with coverage for cellphone data so this hasn't been an issue.

I'm a big fan of the On The Fly Path Function but today I was in a Valley with no cell phone coverage but good Satellite Coverage. I tried to run the faithful On The Fly Plan but no luck it felt like it needed to connect to the internet  to do it. I know I can run an On The Fly with coverage then save it and use it for Offline (but this defeats the purpose of setting up a shot on the spur of the moment in a no coverage area). So is it true you can't in the Native App if Offline run any On The Fly Functions?

Would be so good if all the standard Dronelink On The Fly function's were built into the app and be able to run Offline.

Cheers

This is already the case. Was it not working for you? What was the error message?

    Hi Jim

I just hit the On The Fly Path function and it went back to the Dronelink App screen but nothing. Another time it spun loading but never loaded.

I thought it was weird so as soon as I got back to the saddle with cellphone coverage it worked fine.

Any ideas? Does dronelink store a log that may help?

PS I have to say your responsive on this forum even in weekends is nothing short of amazing!

    Cheers

Oh one other thing on DJI fly it had a150m flight height restriction pop up which is weird as limit here everywhere is 120m. I brought my maximum height to about 120m but it still persisted in DL not loading. Where I was was about 400m Above Sea Level but I'm sure Dronelink would be using AGL before it decided not to run because I was outside some DJI restriction?

I have some more information on this issue.

    YELLOW ARROW

So I was just inside a 150m height restriction zone when I couldn't load the "Path" On The Fly Function, this was also out of cellphone range.

    RED ARROW

Back out of the valley and cellphone coverage On The Fly "Path" function loaded fine? but I'm still in the restriction zone.

    PURPLE ARROW

I don't live far from there and in that restricted zone but in airplane mode "Path" On The Fly function also loads fine?

    Any ideas?

Opening functions does not / should not have anything to do with being in a restricted zone or not. Dronelink is set to automatically cache all the on-the-fly functions when the app first loads (assuming you have a network connection). What is confusing to me is that you prove you can load the function while offline (being in airplane mode). It's almost like the area that you have no cell coverage isn't 100% out of network service, but instead maybe it is actually online but the network is terribly slow which is why it seems like it never loads (it is trying to sync to the servers). If you go back to that area and just put it in airplane mode, does it load fast?

Thanks Jim that sounds like a highly plausible reason. I'm guessing while I don't have any visible connection to any cellphone towers in there, signals could be bouncing off canyon walls as some of the peaks have towers on them so I could have been picking up some weak signal.

So the rule is if Dronelink has any sort of signal it will try and download/update On the Fly Functions from the web server but if no signal it just uses the last updated function on the phone, in any dodgy signal areas I should just put it in airplane mode...

More I think about it this is exactly what would have happened, very good to understand how that connection or partial connection, impacts things.

Now if you can sort out why after 13km's my rear derailleur snapped off my bike and I had to walk the bike out would be much appreciated :-)

    Cheers
