My first mapping mission...
Well, it didn't go without a hitch, but after a couple of tweaks it went very well. The problem was an altitude limit issue, where I was somehow accidentally exceeding the 120M AGL limit. I did a mapping flight over some 8 acres of my property, resulting in some 189 jpeg images from my Mavic 2 P. I decided to try using WebODM as my processing software, and it actually worked pretty well. Running it with the "highest quality" output, it took less than an hour to run, and I ended up with a GeoTIFF image that had something like 1cm/pixel ground resolution, though it was a pretty large file (over 400 MB!!!). I uploaded that file into Google Earth, and it overlays almost perfectly, giving a very nice high-resolution view of the area around my house. There are a few "edge" artifacts that can be solved using additional drone photos, but that's how you learn.
I'm a very happy camper!
Thank you, DroneLink for creating this very capable and affordable application for planning drone flights! The learning curve is a little steep, but the utility of this tool makes the effort quite worthwhile.
I'm also quite happy with WebODM, not only because it is FREE!!! but because it works very well for my needs. I'm running it in a Docker virtual machine and even though that isn't quite as efficient as running it directly in a Linux machine, it still runs well.
Anyway, again, many thanks to DroneLink for developing this flight management tool! May you have a very merry Christmas, and a most happy and prosperous New Year!
