Multiple failures near edge of Restricted Zone - Is there a hidden buffer?

Daniel Snyder

Today I was flying near an airport with an approved Waiver (Certificate of Authorization) and have used the approved unlock request from DJI entered it into the DJI drone. I found I could fly manually right to the edge of the zone using DJI Fly and GO 4 for my drones (Air2S and Mavid 2 Pro).  However the Drone Link Mapping Mission stops me well short of the zone edge and the mission fails with the "Can't Take Control" message.  This happened with multiple flight attempts.

What is the additional buffer zone added by Drone Link?  How can it be reduced so I can fly the full mapping Mission - right up to the edge of the formal authorization zone?  Waivers take a lot of effort to get and I've lost my window and have to apply for a new one so knowing what to request is needful.

The DJI SDK / DJI firmware prevents virtual stick control when flying near NFZs. You will probably also notice that you are unable to manually fly any nearer with the RC sticks.

One way to reduce the problems with that is to apply to DJI for a custom unlock.  You will need to provide them with evidence that you have permission to fly there and, if it is the first time you are doing this, you will need to go through creating a profile.

Using that I have been able to fly even in red zones (after FAA approval, of course).
